Dave Matthews Band Biopic... Why not?

I was randomly watching some comment on DMB Gorge Crew Facebook page about which actor would be better in playing Dave in a biopic.

Then I thought that a biopic about Dave Matthews would really make sense. I mean, apart from the reason that is one of the biggest rock bands of all the time, when you think about their story, there are a lot of moments that are quite dramatic.

• Dave’s personal story, his father, his youth in South Africa.
• the dramatic loss of his sister.
• the way Dave met the band at Miller’s. The early days.
• His unrequited love for Julia Grey, and the anger in writing Halloween
• the way the band was traveling and the growing success
• the world success and the concerts in the stadiums
• Steve Lillywhite
• the LWS leak, Everyday, the fans
• Dave’s depression
• Some Devil and the “Dave and Friends” time
• the failure of Stand Up. The arguments with Roi and the band
• Roi’s death
• a new life. Still together with DMB 3.0
• Boyd
• The new start with Buddy Strong

I think there is enough for a movie plot, and I wonder if nodoby has thought about it.

I imagine it in the same way that Bohemian Rhapsody was filmed. It would make a really great movie

I've always said that DM/DMB has one of the most interesting backstories of any musician/band out there.

This could totally happen...I've shown Non DMB Fan friends and family the VH1 Driven Documentary and they were engaged and enjoyed.

Re: Dave Matthews Band Biopic... Why not?

When I think of exciting and interesting band origin stories/behind-the-scenes anecdotes, DMB never comes to mind. When compared to classic rock legends and modern hip hop stories, DMB is about as bland of a story as they come.

Absolutely not. Talk about a boring as fuck movie.

No offense to Xacel, I just think we need to see outside our little forum world here and realize this band isn’t that special.

Re: Dave Matthews Band Biopic... Why not?

I've seen enough small docs and read enough books/articles. The only thing I'd be interested in at this point would be something like a 5-part series where Dave does an in-depth discussion regarding fifty or so songs. That small part in the BWGGK doc where he talks about #40 was wildly interesting to me.

Re: Dave Matthews Band Biopic... Why not?

If you were gonna make a DMB movie, I'd say the movie should be framed around a milestone show/event after the death of LeRoi (maybe the start of the Big Whiskey tour), and the movie should mainly be about them as a unit up to the moment he passed, with time to reflect on that passing and how it changed the group and a decent amount of time given to them rebuilding their relationships before Roi's untimely end. There's obviously plenty of band history left, but I feel like as a film, this is the best narrative thread to follow.

How about little known actor David Matthews to play Dave Matthews? A little de-aging and BAM, you got yourself skinny pajama pants Dave.

There will never be a scripted movie. Their story actually isn't that dramatic and they aren't perceived as being that important. Hell, they can't even get into the Rock Hall currently. And, yes, Freddie Mercury is very important (not a joke).

However, I do look forward to the day when a 'real' documentary is made. Remember in the Howard Stern interview where Dave alluded to Roi battling demons? Never heard that before. Or the fact there is clearly something wrong with Boyd? Not to mention Ballard, the Lillywhite sessions, and the burden/humility that goes with their sustained success.

When regular Boyd became "split dreads so we can see his scalp/uncomfortably defined 8-pack" Boyd, we knew there was something wrong with him.

would rather they opened the vault and released all their currently unreleased music from studio sessions over the years.

I don’t think either that there will be a movie ever. Chances are absolutely minimal. And I didn’t say that I want a movie.

But when I think about some part of DMB story, I do see some very dramatic moments. Of course everything rotates around Dave and Roi. The story of a strong friendship, with some very critical moments and then one dies suddenly. The huge pain.
And before, Dave had some very critical moments, and was thinking about suicide.
There would be quite some material for a good plot.

If a think about a good documentary instead, Netflix made a great one about Avicii, which had a complicated story, but much less sophisticated than DM’s one. Totally different world, but for a moment I am not referring to the music, just to the story.

I never liked The Beach Boys, but Love & Mercy was quite an interesting movie to me. What I mean here is that it is not required to deal with an absolute rockstar to make a good movie. I enjoyed Searching For Sugar Man a lot, and I had no idea of who Sixto Rodriguez was, before I watched the movie.

Love & Death, most of DMB songs and their story rotate around those two themes, and these are often the ones that are used to make a movie (thinking also of The Doors).

Yes to this...something like the Petty or Eagles. Better yet, a long detailed multipart Longer Strange Trip Grateful Dead mini-series on Amazon.
