I agree with this. Jeff is just such a great musician and saxophonist. DMB is very fortunate to have had two awesome saxophonists, each in their own way.

I pick the founding member 6 out of 7 days a week. There are some days I enjoy the fast, in your face, hard rock DMB from 08-13...but it's obviously LeRoi.

I prefer both, it depends on the moment

As someone described it years ago...

Roi's style is to make sweet love to you.
Jeff's style is to fuck you like a jack-rabbit.

Both will leave you satisfied. It just depends on your mood.

I'd much rather listen to a show with Roi and admittedly don't really care for dmbs current sound but after thinking about it a bit, it's not really fair to compare the two. Jeff does not have any of the creative leway that Roi had in the band. It seems he's basically Dave's studio sax player. Not to mention having to compete with rashawn blasting away on that trumpet. If it were just Jeff, I think it would be much different.
I also would have preferred branford and if they had to have a trumpet player I would have rathered dearth. Although at this point without a violin, it doesn't make much of a difference.

Re: Who Do You Prefer for DMB: Roi or Jeff

Not sure why this thread was reported but whatever, all good and I can toss my two cents in for whatever they are worth.

I believe Jeff in the better musician but Roi was an exceptional musician himself and just an all around good guy. Maybe 15 years ago we were up in Hartford for a two night stand, the morning of the second show some friends and I were walking to snag breakfast. A buddy turns to us and says something like 'Shit, that is Roi walking right towards us.' We stopped for a moment on the sidewalk and complimented the show the prior night and he was thankful and signed some stubs for us but it was clear he was in a rush so we said our goodbyes.

Couple hours later we are sitting at a table in the Crown Plaza and out of the blue Roi walks in, notices us and heads directly over to our table and sits. He explained that it was fathers day and he had plans with family and friends who came in for the weekend. He sat with us for a while just chatting about random stuff then gave us all a drum stick saying it was great to hang out with us chatting about stuff other than DMB or music - just normal chat! Then when our tab came a while later when we were ready to hoof it to the Meadows for the show it had been taken care of by Roi who left us backstage passes with the hotel bartender.

That is what kind of a guy Roi was, not just an amazing musician but a kind and generous man who made an impact on millions of lives.

That is such a cool story, Lucsulla, you guys have been so lucky to hang out with Roi. The amazing thing of the story is that Roi remembered you and wanted to catch up for the time he didn’t have before. What a great person. Also he gave you backstage passes, man! Do you have any photo of that moment to share?

    Jeff.

I think people here like Roi more because he's "an original member", he died tragically.

But personally, I think Jeff is more exciting/better to watch, and I never saw Roi play 2 saxes at once.

Generally speaking I like Roi better, but I love the energy that Jeff brings to the bigger, more "rock" tunes. He's way more fun in that setting.

Nah Roi fits DMB's music better and has a soulful style that fits the core dmb music better.

Jeff is talented and amazing and i still enjoy him but his style doesn't fit much of the older pre big whiskey music like roi's style does.

I remember Hartford 2015 hearing Branford play in the soulful style of roi and it just fit the music 10 times better than most of Jeff's playing. However listening to Jeff with snarky puppy and the flecktones i appreciated his playing much more outside the realm of DMB.

Jeff and Tim and Rashawn are all talented AF when it comes to being musicians. My issues at times (more tim and rashawn than Jeff) is that they don't fit the music as well when the full band plays over Dave and Fonz post roi. The tone and timing of some of their playing takes away from what made the dmb music great pre roi.

LeRoi can't be replaced when it comes to his artistic vision, and I agree with many who say that he was the heart and soul of the OG lineup.

Jeff is a more technical player and can run circles around everyone in the room, and is an enjoyable watch. We couldn't ask for a better person to step up into that position, and I like both for different reasons.

I like Roi more because he didn't over play and chose the perfect notes and melodies, that being said I think a lot of people don't appreciate how good Jeff is at playing quietly which he does frequently with the band

That's why I can't imagine anyone preferring Jeff over Roi. Also Roi's contributions to the musical composition of songs even beyond his playing is huge.

The Dave Matthews Band we've all become crazy about as fans had Roi as an essential component. Anything DMB does now can still be great, but there is a soul that is either missing or very changed.

I don't even understand the point of asking the question.

Actually, this is more perfect than you think, but not for WHY you think.

I'm assuming you're a guy? Let me know if I'm wrong, but I'd love to hear other women weigh in on this specific metaphor.

Cuz to me... "making sweet love" either in real life or musically includes THE WHOLE RANGE OF POSSIBILITIES. Which I agree, Roi brought. AND we know he was a brilliant composer.

"Jack rabbit"... only guys would say "both are satisfying" Really? For who? Maybe the guys for sure, but I could probably count the women I've heard of being into just jack rabbit style on 2 fingers in all my decades of talking sex with people.

So yes, Roi is like making sweet love, Jeff like jack rabbit, and while making sweet love can include jack rabbit moments, all jack rabbit is never as varied and magical and creative and doesn't require the talent that making sweet love does.

Hey, you started this with that metaphor, don't blame me!

(But let me secretly add that I think Jeff is wildly talented and if we were REALLY doing this metaphor correctly, I'd say he is varied in his style and with BF&F showed many moods and styles and contributions so I do think it's a disservice to reduce him to jack rabbit, but for what he does with DMB mostly it is fair. And Roi still wins.)

Has zero to do with this. Technically, jeff is better. Jeff is a teacher literally and figuratively. He is by the book. The band became who they were by creating a space where each member can shine equally. It has always been about the band, not one person. This is where I stray from Jeff with regards to his role. More often than not he is playing notes and showing what he can do in the sax, which is a lot. He rarely seems to be playing purely through emotion and doesn’t
seems to allow the song to dictate his solos. It is a very cerebral performance. Which is fine.

What makes Roi the choice for me is his unrivaled creative ability. His work is cornerstone to the albums he participated on. Songs that would literally sound differently and not as good if he were not in them. Give me a song where Jeff has created a riff and where it strays from the already created melody that was but still manages to fit perfectly.. Jeff’s contribution I think starts an ends literally with simply adding a sax to the sound.

Roi’s contribution was far greater, a contribution dave has elaborated on. I don’t remember a time jeffs sound gave me chills. On the other hand, I listen to many live versions of songs solely for the reason that Roi had an incredible solo, solos that continue to give me chills and take me to places that Jeff never has. Ans this isn’t to diminish jeffs role. This explanation is simply meant to highlight the role that Roi has had on the band imho.

And you highlight playing two saxs at once which gets further to my point. I don’t LISTEN to music in order to watch somebody dance around while playing sax. I listen to music to be moved and to take me places music only can. It is not a visual exercise in my experience

    Roi.
And I'm a huge fan of Jeff, and I really enjoy what he has done since joining and enjoy his solo work even more.
But Roi was the primary musician I watched in DMB, and he was the one who hooked me the first time I saw them live. It's just not even close to the same without him. I think a version of DMB where Roi and Buddy were on stage at the same time could have been something really special.
