"Dave would be nothing without Tim" is complete crap, I'm sure Tim could suggest being part of a band to many people, wonder if Dave Matthews had anything to do with where Dave Matthews Band got to

Kept going to shows mostly out of habit, rarely ever listen to '12 - '16 and don't own any LT's from that time period, almost entirely because of their sound

Re: Who do you prefer? Buddy, Butch or Peter?

The issue I have is people try to say "buddy can't play as jazzy as butcch". The reality is he doesn't have a choice to play as jazzy as butch because of the nature of the band. Buddy is forced onto Organ based on the Tim C/DC loud AF wall of sound vibes post roi. Also people always bring up no violin with buddy like it's his fault and not a decision by dave. What does no violin have to do with how talented buddy is? He didn't say "yo get boyd out and don't replace him". Being at shows like SPAC N2 I was able to hear rare displays of buddy actually getting to jazz things up on the Bartender from that show. LITHOG is another example of everyone else shutting the f up so we can actually hear buddy play soulfully without having roar-shawn or tim over play in front of him.

To me buddy is the best from these 3 and if he was able to play in the roi era dmb we would get to see more displays of him doing wonderful things on the keys more instead of being on the organ so much.

Buddy. I don’t care for Butch that much and Peter was pretty not-good.

all three brought something different, I think Buddy is the most talented of the three but lots of great memories with Butch. Peter gets a lot of play with me bc I listen to a lot of early stuff.

Pretty easily Butch for me. I cannot stand the organ sound. Admittedly, Buddy has reduced his use of the organ but it is still a prominent instrument in a lot of the songs.

Definitely Butch, by a long shot. He knew how to incorporate himself and stay out of the way. Buddy is just all over everything. It's like every song is a friggen gospel song. It's like the Lovely Ladies all over again.

Buddy. I love a good Organ solo, and I like his dialed back use of it lately in favor of piano as well. The fact that he can sing and also really solo is a plus. Love the energy he brings.

The problem with the post roi band is you can't have subtle fills with it. Case in point is butch playing with DMB during the Concert for Cville show a few years ago. You literally couldn't tell he was on stage cause the rest of the band was playing so loud over him.

I think buddy playing organ and bringing a gospel tone is more about dave's direction of the band than Buddy's actual talents to play well. On sirus xm dave have buddy play steady as we go and it was as beautiful as anything butch did with the keys prior to the band going full Tim C/DC after roi passed. If Buddy was with the roi era band he would have just as good fills as butch and would actually have solos that didn't put people to sleep like butch on two step.

I did as well, very happy with the "current" sound though and it's much improved than the years I was referencing. I get some people can't say "Tim C/DC" enough but they are very different than they were '12-'16 in that way.

Have to admit I’m not a Buddy Strong fan. Butch was my dude. Not to say I didn’t get sick of his long drawn out solos on Jimi, and a couple other ones, but that song was getting old for many reasons at that point.

It’s not my place to say who and what the band should be, but from my perspective Buddy doesn’t really fit with DMB. I like his playing sometimes, it is nice to hear keys again, and I’m happy to hear the band sounding tighter and even playing a bit more dynamically again, but he’s too flashy for my taste. The B Strong brand all the time, the towel waving, the incessant “woos”, just not my thing when thinking of a DMB show. He would make a great guest, but as a full time member I’d prefer Butch in a heartbeat. Buddy kind of weirds me out for some reason.

I'm honestly surprised Butch isn't the far and away choice here. Listen to that Vegas 2020 show, in just about every other song Buddy does that key slide thing. It's really dumb and something a keyboard player in a middle school band would do. However, he could be a good fit if they would let him actually do more jazzy things like that Bartender outro jam or the WTWE intro from Cuyahoga in 18....play to his talents and what he can bring, as opposed to the cookie cutter key setup within the band.

As i said earlier listen to Butch play with the band in A concert for cville...you can't hear him but he is there. Butch was part of the best era of DMB and was able to be jazzy and smooth fill wise because the band wasn't a loud wall of sound back then. Even so his solos on songs like two step sucked.

Buddy is being asked to play on organ based on the direction and sound of what dave wants from the band. However in isolated settings of songs like Hands of god or bartender from spac 2018 he is able to really do some smooth jazzy fills when actually given the chance. Same thing with the Steady as we go with dave on Sirius XM from the live from home by request show.

Dave is the quarterback calling the plays and the team was better in 2004 than it is in 2021. Buddy is a better wide receiver on a worse team in 2021. Butch is Wes Welker with the patriots. Extremely talented but if he doesn't have the screens and blocking he isn't as good as buddy. Especially when it comes to solos.

Most of those two step solos from butch went nowhere. Central Park is an exception but a lot of them from 2000-2004 were just meh.

    Yep.

I can't think of ever being a show with Butch and thinking to myself "This guy sucks".

He was a definitive part of the band's sound during, arguably, two of their best tours. Fall 98 and Summer 00.

Butch was amazing during his entire tenure with the Band. I was sad to see him go.

Brutal. He’s just too much, but apparently the band thinks they need him.

Who said Butch’s Two Step solos went nowhere? That’s crazy talk. He and Carter had some amazing moments on that tune. I do prefer the electric guitar solo on Two Step though, but Butch brought it back in the day.
