lulz, although I was joking about Ice Cube.

I mean I love the guy personally, but he doesn't belong in this discussion.

some people may not know that Dr. Dre has a ghostwriter on a LOT of his songs...for example, Jay Z wrote all the lyrics to "Still D.R.E.". But Dre's delivery and that awesome beat he came up with make him an awesome musician.

I've listened to your top three... do not agree. Illmatic on a whole is just perfect in my opinion, his lyrics and flow are amazing, it's incredible to think Nas had this kind of talent at such a young age.

I'd like to throw Deltron 3030 on there. Maybe not better than Illmatic, but definitely worthy of a top spot.
Also Marshall Mathers LP > Slim Shady LP

    Re: Best Rapper of All-Time

Eminem and Jay-Z are the biggest and most commercially successful of the bunch, and will go down as the most legendary... Eminem is like the reverse Jackie Robinson of rap, while Jay-Z's songs and his mark in general on pop culture are absolutely unharalded in rap history, and he'll be remembered greatly for it.

Biggie and Pac are both remembered like Kurt Cobain--Both were great, but are remembered for being better than they actually were because their lives were cut down at the peak of their abilities. It's not a knock on them, but it is a knock on their legacy, because if they stuck around longer, they would not have continued to go up--They would have plateaued and unquestionably given enough time would have made a ton of crap (Not to say they didn't do that while they were alive).

KRS-One and Rakim were both great, but are like Babe Ruth or Ty Cobb--Great in their own time, but if they came out today, they wouldn't hold a candle to some of the great artists out there, and they'd be lost in the shuffle. Their legacy will always be for advancing rap in the early years--Not for being the best ever.

Nas is too underground of a guy to ever be considered 'the greatest ever'--Talentwise, I think there's no one out there better, but in terms of actual product, I think that he falls waaaaay short of his abilities. Snoop isn't even one of the top 10... He's like the Nolan Ryan of rap--People just consider him one of the greatest because he's been around forever, and for no other reason. He's good and enjoyable, but he's not legendary.

And I'll go ahead and assume Wayne is a joke.

Q-Tip is my all time favorite, but I wouldn't consider him the greatest ever. In terms of combinations of talent and success, Jay-Z and Eminem I think are the two greatest ever. I don't think I could really choose between the two, although at this point in my life, I would pick Jay-Z--But that's all it is; a preference.

All these people have in common is that their legacy is heavily based on what they could have done given more life.

    Re: Best Rapper of All-Time

Its debatable what BIG and Pac's legacy could have been. I dont think with Big's incredible natural MC talent, he would have gone on to put out crap music. I can only assume he would continue to put out classic material, but thats really a completely different debate. Ready to Die and Life After Death alone should justify his status as the best rapper of all time, along with how insanely influential he was throughout the entire genre.

I don't think you could really say 2Pac has a knock on his legacy. Dude had an unreal career in the short years he was around. From the music, movies, everything.
