Was Alpine N1 Average for Current DMB?

The band has added several great songs to their regular rotation since the beginning of the summer tour, however most of the better sets have had runs that could have been better. Do you feel Alpine N1 was an average show, below average or above average?

Re: Was Alpine N1 Average for Current DMB?

WAY above average. It's rare that they pull of a set like that which flows well, avoids the mid-set slump, hits on Openers, set closers and encores.

A set like that SHOULD be the norm, but sadly it is not. I think a set like last night is partially why people get so frustrated with this band. They're capable of nailing a set like that, yet are equally (or more) likely to turn in something like a Nashville. None of the songs last night are super rare or were even debuts (outside of the Dr John tribute). It was just a well written set.

Honestly, it's probably one of the better post-2sets shows. And it only amplifies the venue wars and prevailing notion that you have to go to a destination venue to get good shows

I'd say it's slightly above average.

While I don't go onto threads and bitch about setlists, I am skeptical about the crappy setlists of the last 10 years. And last's night was excellent, except for Can't Stop. I guess Dave knew a few people who needed to go to the restroom.

It was above average as a setlist for this tour. Still drives me nuts that this band wants to play 3 covers in a show.

I clicked on the wrong option, show was above average on paper for sure. It was my first for the tour tho so I can't really compare it to anything.

Decided to go to N2 after Tinley this week and glad I missed N1 due to the repeats. That being said, it’s a good show and I would have enjoyed IOY, Seek Up, and Water/Wine. Need those songs to cross off.

This show looks very strong on paper (and like a lot of shows this year, it probably seemed even stronger if you were there). It’s interesting, though, to compare the reaction to this set to that of a show like Riverbend last Tuesday. These shows look, again on paper, very close to me. Alpine might have the edge, but I would rate both similarly. And yet Riverbend gets barely a peep on these forums, while Alpine has words like ‘epic’ and ‘legendary’ tossed around. The effect of getting a good set at a destination venue seems to elevate it in our collective minds, while a similar set at an ordinary venue goes largely ignored. Just interesting to me. Again, Alpine N1 was great. It was better than Riverbend. But not that much better, to occasion all this talk. Maybe N2 though?

There were no blow-away tour debuts last night, but what made lads night way above average was the lack of bad songs. I would only give Can’t Stop a -1.

Yup. Funny how that works. Play more good songs and less bad songs and you get a better show. Wish Dave could work that formula every night.

My only -1 as well. I sure miss the violin still (especially on ants), but you play setlists every night, and I will enjoy myself, and spend $$ traveling.

Agreed, and there were larger chunks of good show flow than typical shows.

3 covers is a bit much and personally, but I would have enjoyed the maker.

This is my first alpine weekend I haven't been to since 2002, and I've been disappointed in sets overall the last couple tours, but at least on paper I would have walked away feeling like I saw an above average set last night.

Agree. I'm sitting here half awake like

All I know is I watched the opener on Periscope, YNK, and that has to be a summer tour series version down the road.. freaking spotless!

If you think that's an average 2019 DMB show, you've fallen way too in love with seeing TD and LIB on a setlist.

It’s an A- show in the Buddy strong era.

    And that’s a great thing.

Especially when the LIBs have been shit like if I had it all. Give me a 7 minute constant rotation two step over something liberated from an album that’s slightly below average

I’d give it a B or B+...swap out 2 of the covers for 2 good/decent songs of their own and it’s a solid A for 2019 (based on the setlist alone)

I don’t understand what was so great about last night. It looks like a cookie-cutter “greatest hits” setlist from any festival show 2008-2013.

There were no awful runs of songs, yeah. But it’s truly pathetic how THAT is the standard “fans” of this band now hold them to. “Well, half the show didn’t outright suck, so yeah AWESOME SETLIST”

For 2019, sure it’s above average. And that in itself is saying how much this band has tanked in the last 6 years.

How many times can you folks pay to hear grey st, dont drink and ants marching?? I just don’t get it. 20+ times each was enough for me in one lifetime. Greatest hits singles stopped getting me excited at shows long, long ago

Average DMB setlist (for me) is around a +8 these days. Last night is a +15.

So no, not even close to average.

I enjoy seeing DMB play great songs that I've loved since I was a kid, I think I'm around 30 shows or so, need to add to my stats list. I'm hoping to do SPAC and Gorge next year, hopefully hear a lot of the songs I love multiple times.

You sad it’s missing big whiskey, stand up and come tomorrow nonsense?

People can say whatever they want, but the less newer material in sets usually means the better the shows will be. And by new I mean after lillywhite sessions.

Some small exceptions of course (YNK, half of AFTW, so right, what you are, Virginia, 04 stuff etc)

YNK, ASTB > TM > WH opening run, Dr John cover with PHJB, The Maker sans guest, DDTW > Seek Up midset, Jane > Water/Wine, Two Step > Ants closing run. Maybe that's what people consider to be great? Also, Grey Street wasn't played last night, so I'm not really sure why you'd use that song in your argument. It'll get played tonight, but tonight is not the topic being discussed.
