Irvine, CA Approves New Amphitheatre

A new amphitheatre to "replace" Irvine Meadows, has been approved by the city. Along with Live Nation, there are plans to open an interim facility by early August of this year.

The eventual venue will only be 12K, quite a bit smaller than Irvine Meadows was, so it might be tough for a band as popular as DMB to perform there.

Might we see D&T there this August though? Here's the email:

We did it...We saved live music in Irvine!

Before an overflow crowd, the Irvine City Council Tuesday night unanimously approved a 12,000-seat outdoor amphitheater next to the Orange County Great Park. While we can never replace the beloved Irvine Meadows Amphitheater, which closed last fall after a memorable 35 years, we are thrilled to usher in a new era of live music.

If all goes well, the new interim venue with all the conveniences, amenities and high quality experience concert fans have come to expect, could open by early August for the second half of the 2017 summer concert season.

Thanks to Save Live Music Irvine, all 35,000 strong, we accomplished something many thought was impossible. Live Nation and FivePoint now have the green light to build and operate a new outdoor concert venue to keep the rich summer tradition started with Irvine Meadows alive in Irvine.

Your support, messages and well wishes were critical to our success. Stay tuned for updates about the new venue and info about the upcoming season. We’re stoked and hope you share our excitement about the power of live music. Cheers!

Saw this too. I would guess it is not in play for D&T, but it is good news.

Why would you say it's not in play? Given Live Nation's direct involvement, I would not be surprised if they have some acts already lined up, especially if they anticipated it would be approved.

Northerly Island in Chicago is not exactly a state of the art facility, and I would expect the interim venue to be something like that. No telling if anything is in the works, but I would not say it's completely unlikely.

If they did end up announcing there, that could also explain the 2nd leg delay.

After reading another article, I see that it was just the interim facility that was approved, which will be 12K capacity. They intend to come up with a design for the permanent venue, which I imagine will be bigger.

The temp facility is supposedly going to be modeled based on the design of the America's Cup Pavilion in San Francisco.

Huge venues (Alpine, Gorge) are struggling

Is it size or location that causes those two to struggle? Neither are really easy to get to or all that close to/in major cities.

Fair point, what big metro amp is doing well? Pretty sure the relatively-new Tampa amp isn't doing well

It doesn't appear they have any solid dates on when this would open.

They said early August. They intend to have a half season, and go through October, then open in April next year.

Normally I would say they're being optimistic, but Live Nation is involved, so I feel confident they are going to make sure it's open by August, so they can get some mileage out of this year's summer concert season.

Irvine Meadows held around 19K with the lawn, and I would think that the permanent venue will fall somewhere between the interim venue's 12K and that. Comparing this to Gorge or Alpine is ridiculous. Neither of those are in a prime metro area like So Cal, and they also have HUGE lawns, which is why they rarely are filled.

Good numbers. Bigger certainly isn't always better when it comes to venue capacity. It's tough with how great TV is for sports.

New GA dome has 71,000 listed for capacity for football. Still smaller than the old one though.

So, has anyone made it to the new air Irvine Avenue yet? Just curious how it turned out.
