Re: Ryley Walker To Release Lillywhite Sessions Cover Album

Can someone do a solid and translate his Bandcamp bio from Word Salad into English?

Quote:
Ryley Walker is the reincarnation of the true American guitar player. That’s as much a testament to his roving, rambling ways, or the fact that his Guild D-35 guitar has endured a few stints in the pawnshop. Swap out rural juke joints for rotted DIY spaces and the archetype is solidly intact.
Srsly what the shit?

And his sentiments in his interview that he "can't say [Dave] is the best, most poignant lyricist," really shows that he really, really just doesn't get it. At all.

Full disclosure: I bought Deafman Glance. The lyric sheet is full of oblique sentence fragments alluding to "worn sunlight" and "bruised jaws laughing" and such non-committal half-thoughts. Luckily, he moans them all unintelligibly on the record, so the audience is free to imagine all the poignancy and bestness they want...
The music is boring, aimless, tuneless Millennial Mumble Prog, full of endless alternations of staccato notes, tied together by sloppy, non-melodic scales and brackish lakes of undifferentiated listless plinking.
Will still get the Lillywhite disc, but expectations aren't exactly soaring...

Meh, not a fan of Deafman Glance. I liked the sound he had going on Primrose Green, but it kind of just meandered around and didn’t really go anywhere that makes me want to come back and listen again. Deafman Glance suffers from the same flaw to my ears. Just doesn’t go anywhere and all kind of sounds the same, only this time around I don’t like the sound as much. Primrose is a solid folk album that has a great open jazziness to it, which I enjoyed. But this album, he changed his voice (I like his effort and delivery much more on the former album) and the sound of the album is just boring to me. Like trying to be “prog” but ultimately falls flat to me and almost sounds pretentious. I didn’t get that “pretentious” feeling from Primrose at all.

For the second part of your comment, I wouldn’t know because I have never used twiter

Most charitable use of the word "almost," ever.

Re: Ryley Walker To Release Lillywhite Sessions Cover Album

hey everyone- thanks for listening. just wanna say i get a weird rep from being a total dumbass on twitter but i really love dave and company. long time fan since i was a kid. it was super fun to do this music. i think coming from the indie rock world, it made the whole thing even more interesting. i understand everyone's skepticism but hope you can enjoy the record. not meant to be funny or anything. i also don't take myself so seriously. its been a lot of fun to cover all the tunes from lillywhite sessions and put our spin on them. I think the next tune to be released is "diggin' a ditch" which should be out this week.

and for the record....monkey man is fine....i was kinda drunk doing the interview and was prob jabbing too hard to be funny. i think its a fine song. i think we did a pretty cool tribute. some you may dig, others not. just know its all outta love. a true pleasure.

anywho....just wanted to drop by and say hi. thanks everyone for checking out the tunes. i appreciate it. a few people have come out to my gigs simply because they heard about me from this project. that means the world to me. see ya soon.

^^^ Gotta hand it to Mr. Walker for being a class act with that post.
(I actually thought his comments on Monkey Man were perfectly reasonable anyway...)

As far as I know- digging a ditch and Grace is gone.

Digging is a sonic ripper and Grace is pretty head on with the original.

Like any other release these days it will leak so please have at it if and when the time comes. Maybe grip the wax if you dig enuff. Pressing is great and is mastered beautifully. A leak would only be natural for this project. Ha.

very true I can't wait to hear what you did with the rest of the sessions.

I do plan on preordering the vinyl. As most of everyone here, Busted Stuff was my introduction to your music, and I do dig your music. I'll probably grab Deafman Glance while I'm at it.

We got lost on “Monkey Man.” That song sucks, that’s the worst song on that record.

It’s really fucked up. When we went into the studio the only song we had no idea what to do with was “Monkey Man.” Honestly, I got Dave’s back, but this is not a good song. The words suck, the grooves suck. We didn’t have any idea what to do with it, we tapped out of ideas.
Wow Ryley Walker! You are a shinning example/reason why we should bring the word 'Cocksucker' back out of early Politically-Correcting-Retirement. It's actually a great word & bulls-eye descriptor for those meatheads that has nothing to do w sexual preferences/lifestyle, rather, it just tightens-up the more wooden translation, replacement, like, Capital Duechehole.

For a doof who claims to have DM's back and '...in long-standing defense of DMB,' you def come across as just another bimbo convinced DMB can only 'pantomime good musicians' or someone who claims to listen to only really good music and not Monkey Man, 'the worst song on the album', just because you found it difficult co-op.

M.M. only illustrates that even the B-side songs of the album were exceptional and better than some of those later debut album tracks. It's also well positioned in the album, bridging two of my favorite jam tracks on the album and an extended-jam-1-2-punch, i.e. following Bartender.
If you can't crack Monkey Man, the only LS track abducted from the fans/community, then you're not covering the album, ur just marketing. cocksucker!

Re: Ryley Walker To Release Lillywhite Sessions Cover Album

There’s something I can’t quite put my finger on about this that I don’t like.

For one thing tLWS are something of hallowed ground for Dave Matthews fans. I would venture to say, especially the older fans - the ones around since the beginning, or at least the ones from back then.

Just look at the “story time” thread that is going on at the moment about it. There are really old school fans in there talking about downloading this thing on Napster and all of the mysterious lore surrounding this album. I can’t really explain how important this album is to so many fans and what it meant to them back in 2000.

What really rubs me the wrong way is a newer, Stand Up-loving fan (to each his own) is going back to an album (that wasn’t ever released) that he has little to no emotional connection to and covering them. It seems very patronizing. It’s like you know the album is important to the fanbase, but you have no clue as to why.

And the Monkey Man thing seems to prove my point. You’re entitled to your opinion, but anybody who holds this album in high regard, anyone who treasures it like a lot of fans who were around at the time treasure it, wouldn’t have that to say about any song on that album.

And so how could this project truly be a labour of love and not some marketing scheme?

If you can't crack Monkey Man, the only LS track abducted from the fans/community, then you're not covering the album, ur just marketing. cocksucker!
Well to be fair, Dave probably agrees. He left it off Busted Stuff, never played it live and, as far as we know, never attempted it again in the studio. I think that’s good enough evidence that he doesn’t care for it. Dave has looked back on numerous songs that were abandoned that he himself has said were garbage. I honestly like Monkey Man, but I don’t think it makes you a cocksucker to not like one song.

Monkey Man is boring. You're allowed to have that opinion and shouldn't be called a cocksucker
