I know that’s the alpine Outro, could have sworn it’s on BS but I haven’t listened in awhile. One very lyrics post-LWS that is Dave’s best.
great line indeed, wish it could have seen itself in any other song.

There was no LWS anywhere at the time of my finding, just the band and maybe some deep insiders had it. Someone (either in the band or a deep insider) had the tracks in their personal collection under non-descriptive titles so they wouldn't be found. Napster happened to catalog them, or maybe they had them in their Napster folder to be able to send to someone else closely involved in this.
I started searching by users personal collections, I sorted by those collections that had the most DMB files, In one of those users collections I came across Song A, Song B, Song C and so on. I downloaded those because they seemed out of place among all the other DMB songs in this users collection with descriptive track titles. These were the clips I had. They were not at all the LWS we have today and they were not even the Demo #2 recordings. They were in a much less mixed state and much rawer than both.

Cool story bro. So... you lost track of these files that every single person on this site would want to hear? Sounds about right.

Was Knapp the one who grabbed the disk from Stefan?

there were other LWS copies that were different takes of what we have today, but without any clips there's no way we could confirm this.

See what you can find on an old computer.

I don’t call BS that it wasn’t him (though it was lifted from his room/cabin), but him claiming he destroyed his copy before flying back to LA, that’s just so obviously BS.

Yes, absolutely. Honestly, I remember hearing that for the first time and feeling like it could have been a continuation to BTCS after the outro.

    Yeah, seriously - dramatic much?

I have to stop thinking about LWS and Captain. The first time I heard this song, I was flying back from Italy and had it on repeat on my discman. The hair on my arms stood up the entire time, and then when I thought it couldn't get better - Bartender.

Give this a listen - doesn't get much better, IMO:

And I want to believe you, I truly do. But we have a vast history of LWS hoaxers, so I need to be the 'slow down' voice.

people that weren't around back then don't realize that dmb leakers were a bit of the wild wild west - so the story isn't out of the ordinary for how stuff got out.

    I hope you find something.

Does anyone else remember when Everyday leaked early and it had a song from another band on it that sounded a lot like dmb? If i remember correctly the band was called "Nine Mile" and the song was called "Patio."

Has there ever been some kind of social petition / Kickstarter fund / etc... to try to get this to happen. Maybe with the 20 year anniversary approaching this should happen if it has not already. A 2020 best of LWS finished mix on vinyl.

^ I admit that I don't mind the current version of that song. However, IMO it suffers from the same problem as Rooftop - that last line just totally derails it

I remember Lillywhite was so proud of Bartender from the small reports we got from the studio. The guy was so on point as far as this band was concerned back then. It was like he was one of us.

I totally agree w what RiotAct was implying, i meant “don’t” as in, it’s terrible how far Dave has fallen as a lyricist.

haha true that. But even what I’d consider an average lyrical effort from Dave on the LWS tracks (Busted Stuff or Raven, probably) is still pretty damned great.

Speaking of heights, the 10 min Bartender on tLWS is proof that in that studio, DMB became a deity.

To me, the decision to lower the pizzicato in the mix and rearrange the verse order stripped away all the subtly that made the LWS version so brilliant.

I understand that it's a funny little image, Dave, but have a little patience! We'll get to that big eyed fish soon enough, no need to payoff the song title right out the gate! Set the stage and I promise we're here for it!

And don't even get me started on that outro........
100%. I’ve blasted the direction BEF took shortly after the leak and how they ruined it by essentially turning it into a glorified intro to Bartender. Boyd PLUCKING the outro?? There truly is no one with worst taste in DMB than Dave Matthews himself. I’ve griped about this so much on certain podcast episodes. Might have to bring it up again on the next one.

I wonder if BS were the leaked versions and LWS were the officially released versions (of course that wouldn't make any sense, but that's not what this is about) if we'd all feel as strongly as do about the superiority of LWS.

Part of their appeal is obviously tied to the fact that they are demos, not polished, ideas still forming, some literally unfinished/incomplete, guttural, raw, expressive, etc. But another aspect we have to embrace is that we have access to this secret music, proof of something different, something special that most others are not only unaware, but unlikely to appreciate. There's a chance we'd have some weirdly similar feelings had Everyday been the first scrapped and discarded attempt at their fourth official major label studio album...although I can't even begin to imagine we'd think of it with a millionth of the reverence we have for LWS.
