Chicago is an amazing place to visit, especially in the Summer. The places that are dangerous are so far away from the heart of the city that you would need to seek them out, unlike a place like NOLA where you could literally walk into the ghetto from Bourbon and get stabbed.

LA, and I literally thought I was going to melt. It was horrific.

Yeah humidity sucks, which is why you should not envy any of us that live East of the Rockies at all. Chicago can get hot and humid, just like a place like NYC can. The entire inland U.S just seems to bake in an oven once Summer arrives, and then you add in unbearable humidity where large bodies of water can be found aside from the West Coast.

Oakland is close enough to downtown SF (and easy enough to commute to and from) that it will be rehabbed if it hasn't begun happening already.

Edit: Plus there is a pretty good sized airport there. When I fly into the Bay Area, I never go SFO, I always fly into Oakland. Much easier.

NOLA was fun. Of course, I had my EDC with me at all times, but I wasn't worried anywhere I went.

Oh I love NOLA, as it is in my top three American cities, but I have never been once where I wasn't offered to buy drugs of some kind. First time I went as a teenager a guy came up to our group and offered us some heroin. Avoid La Quinta Inn's whenever possible.

I don't think anybody offered us heroin, but I'm not entirely sure.

La Quinta's are the lowest of the low on my list of hotels I'd book. Just a smidge below some dude's dead dog's doghouse.
