Re: Star Wars: Han Solo (May 25th, 2018)

Tom- we get it. But Disney is taking arguably the most iconic character and developing his story. they think it's a great idea because he's the most popular character. and knowing that, they know the movie will make a ton of money. We all know that any SW movie will make a ton, but maybe they want to start these spin offs by using a well-known, well-liked character first, just to establish the foundation. From there, they can begin to branch out.

The idea about making a Bobba Fett movie is great- for us. The 30+ yr old SW fans would love that, but the casual fans and the younger fans won't really give a shit. Even though not everyone has the same affection for Solo, everyone loves him...so this sets the foundation. If the movie is good, it will pull in the casual fans and younger fans for a Fett movie, even if they don't know who Fett is.

Tomriddle is completely correct that this is an unnecessary cash grab by Disney

it's a good casting though and will prob be a fun movie so I'll be seeing it when it comes out

But they don't need to "build a foundation" or generate good buzz or introduce people to Star Wars or whatever; all of that is done. Everyone in the world saw The Force Awakens at least six times (or close to it, judging by the box office), everyone in the world will see Rogue One next winter. Star Wars does not have a brand recognition problem or a public perception problem.

I actually felt they had to do a lot of rebuilding of the brand for Force Awakens. The prequels made a lot of people sit up and go "what happened to the great stories and characters??" We were left with trade routes and jar jar binks. I can recall the lead up to Force Awakens and people saying "well, the trailer does look promising but I'm apprehensive and will take a wait and see approach".

Now, if they can keep producing movies in the quality of FA and the OT vs PT, then they won't need to wait as long to start branching out with more unknown characters. But for the first few movies they almost have to stay with familiar territory until people realize FA wasn't a one off and that quality flicks are a top priority.

"his character has the potential to be the center of multiple films"

um...aside from the ones that character is already the center of?

Yep. I was worried about that with just one movie and now they think we need 3? You mean you can't tell his pre New Hope story in one movie?

I kinda like when Han Solo's background was left to ambiguous statements that you didn't know we're true or not. Like a Donald Trump speech.

Still can't get over how tone deaf this idea for a movie (or trilogy!) is, especially from a company whose bread and butter is usually knowing exactly what the public wants. There are so many other good options, why take this road?

You do know that the alternative to "make a Han Solo movie" is not "make one less Star Wars movie", right?

pretty sure we had this debate on the last page.

Han Solo is tried and true, and will sell more toys and tickets than Dengar

Yeah, exactly. There are so many great ideas for SW spinoffs that everyone would love to see, why pick one that pretty much everyone dislikes or is "meh" on?

The idea of Childish Gambino as a young Lando makes me perfectly okay with young Han Solo film.

Don't really give a crap about this movie, but Donald Glover is awesome as shit and am stoked for him to get to play Lando.

Not really sure on the fit though... most of what I've seen Glover do is play kind of a goofy hipster.

Nothing he does in that show screams "Lando" to me.
