Re: Random dmb thoughts that don't need its own thread

I can’t believe that Jeff doesn’t have a solo on Crush, #41, LIOG, or LITHOG this year. I thought he would be a much bigger part of this current lineup. I understand the whole horn section sound evolution but RR & Tim need to share the wealth.

Man seriously is lost somewhere. Between the album and a lack of solos on some of these live songs, how is arguably the most talented member of the band (at least top 3) so underutilized?

Outside of wanting to see the new songs I don't feel bad about missing Camden again. Band just isn't worth seeing live anymore to me :/

The most listened to track for me of the new songs is Bob Law from the C-Ville show in 2016. Those horns...

On reddit a user was looking for a certain version of Grey Street that they had on their computer back in the day.

Someone posted this claiming that it was from a recording session in 1999. This ended up being what the OP was looking for. No way this is DMB and especially not Dave singing but the dude who posted the soundcloud seems to swear it is.

    What say you, AM.org?

Digging a Ditch is an incredibly underrated tune overall. I put it in the Pay For What You Get, Cry Freedom, Let You Down category of songs. I don't immediately reach for them, but they are true classics in my book.

I posted this in the unpopular opinions thread as part of a thread actually related to unpopular opinions...

I was talking to my wife a couple of months ago and realized that I'd amalgamated UtTaD and R2T into one album. I forget that OSW, STJL, Recently, Seek Up, and Minarets are NOT in Under the Table. Clearly, the presence of Ants and Satellite are factors in this mental amalgamation of the albums, but I'd basically listen all the way through the two albums a ton. More often than not it was back to back, back in the day (being 1994 and onward for a few years).

I did a somewhat similar thing with Ani DiFranco's Not a Pretty Girl and Out of Range, but not nearly as unified in my mind.

These are some of my favorite tunes. Let You Down may be my favorite DMB song and Pay for What You Get is right up there. They are songs I want to hear, but my tendency is just to start a DMB album and listen all the way through and these are the most anticipated songs on Crash and UtTaD.

Forgot how much freaking fun Squirm is live. Was just listening to Bader Field version and that outro with the horns and dave’s screaming is great.

Have people over the years clamored for the classic R2T songs to receive a proper studio treatment? I don't think I've ever seen Minarets, Seek Up, STJL, IBYU, OSW, or even Recently pop up on anyone's fantasy tracklist for future releases. Like, ever. And fantasy tracklists have to be the #1 thing to pop up in every thread, regardless of the topic, since the very beginning.

Are we just collectively cool with leaving them all in the past in whatever state John Alagia left em? That doesn't sound like us at all

They already have a proper release on that album. Seek Up and Minarets are both studio recordings. the other tracks were recorded live, but were taken into the studio and mastered and mixed just like a regular studio album. Lots of older bands used that method for recording studio albums, mostly Jazz groups (Weather Report for one). That was the thing that was so cool and special about that record to me, it’s a live/not live studio album that captures the bands sound better than a traditional studio recording could. Christmas song did eventually get a full on studio release in 2000, and obviously the ones from UTTAD and Crash. The only ones missing a traditional studio treatment are Jane, OSW, recently, and I’ll back You Up. Recently got a radio edit for the Recently EP. To me, the rest of them don’t belong anywhere near a studio session.

Crazy, you’re the second person I’ve seen post a similar thing tonight. It’s one of my most listened to albums by far, and is what originally got me hooked on the band. My brother had been showing me songs from the big 3 and busted Stuff. Eventually he sent me Remember Two Things and that’s when it clicked. I fell in love with it and learned all the songs on electric bass and jammed along with it. Next he gave me Live Trax 7, and that live performance of Seek Up sealed my fate as a DMB nerd

After becoming familiar and slightly obsessed with the studio cut of Seek Up, hearing the live version on LT7 was like a fucking light switch. I immediately realized what this band was all about.

I really dig this, too, and appreciate your response. And you're right, and I'll one-up your own counter to me: I believe there was a studio OSW recorded around the same time as Christmas Song. Potentially for the Grand Canyon film? Or maybe the Wood & Steel record that also featured Litho Blitho?

I do wonder sometimes if Recently (my forever #1), Jane, OSW, or really any of the other R2T tunes were ever considered for any of the major RCA releases under Lillywhite. They had to have looked at the entire catalog up to that point for UTTAD so I'm curious which of those were in contention and then for whatever reason fell by the wayside.
