Re: *Prompter Thread* (NO Personal Attacks, Trolling, breaking 52 USC 30121 OR 2 USC

I have some HUGE concerns that the monthly jobs report is going to give congress false security in the recovery, and they are going to let jobless benefits expire at the end of July. The weekly jobless claims does not have the downward slope you want to see, and with recent re-closings it may get worse before it gets better, and the continuing claims rising is unexpected and a big worry.

We still have 14M jobs to add back, and ~7% to cut off the unemployment rate, and I worry fiscal hawks are going to stand in the way of continued relief and the economy will double dip.

I am now among the furloughed who filed for unemployment this week. My employer did what they could to keep us aboard but with no money coming in for likely all of 2020 they had no choice.

Obviously the virus is the main reason behind this. But the idiot “reopen now for freedom” fuckheads made things worse in regards to us gaining control of the spread of the virus. This made the prospects of our business bleak for the rest of 2020. The irony of people using economics as a talking point regarding reopening when that very reopening is causing the opposite to happen would be laughable if it wasn’t so ignorant.

I’m highly skeptical another stimulus package would have been passed regardless.

Sorry about that. Yeah, even though a lot of people are coming back to work, there’s still above average jobless claims every week. This economy is nowhere close to getting back in good shape.

At the beginning of this, many noted that during the Flu pandemic of 1918, the areas that shutdown hard and prevented spread had more swift and robust economic recoveries than those areas that did not.

Many people have been saying it. Very smart people. The best people, really, they tell me "sir! You cannot control the economy until you control the virus."

So that's what I did. I went out, I told them "we'll take control of the numbers real quick." Nobody else could've done that. Nobody *does stupid little hand movement that has never once convinced anybody of anything*

I told my advisors "just stop testing. when you test, you get cases. no tests means no cases. no cases means we can open up again"

Cuomo’s been warning from the start, states that shutdown and have more restrictive measures suffer less economic damage. We’ve learned this from 1918 too. New York reopened safely, and besides the masks, you wouldn’t even know there was a pandemic going on here. Really the only things shut down still are movie theaters, and indoor restaurants in the city.

    Happy Thursday everybody.

Morning reminder that our president cheated on his wife just after she gave birth to his son, with a mid-level porn star, whom he then paid off with money taken from a second mortgage on his lawyer's house, during a campaign for president, and didn't report any of that on FEC disclosure forms, and faced no consequence.

I just typed out this same point and didn’t see your post, haha. States like New York, Connecticut, and New Jersey are as close to “back to normal” as they can get, and they’ve contained the virus. And they acted the most aggressively.

The other thing that is missing here is the portion of us still working that had to take a massive pay cut. I wonder what percentage that is? Are there any numbers anywhere on that? I know very few people personally (not just in travel) that haven't had to take a paycut. Fortunately, my wife is one of them. Otherwise we'd be really fucked.

And that's reflected in the jobs report, too, with a -1.2% month-on-month average hourly earnings drop.

People are losing income even in the case that they're working. I've now lost 2 weeks of pay over the past 2 months with a 1-week furlough in each. State + Federal Unemployment hasn't made me whole, and I didn't received stimulus.

Congress can't let a head fake or dead cat bounce dissuade them from passing more/extending relief for workers.

What makes it even more frustrating is trying to have conversations about these facts with the “reopen now for freedom” crowd gets a person no where. They are so entrenched in this viewpoint that any evidence provided to them such as what you both pointed out is outright dismissed. And I’m not talking about the Trump cult because they are not even worth having discussions about anything with. It’s the normally reasonable people that have this view that frustrate me to no end.

Oof...digging into the jobs report and you find some uglies.

Does Trump really think most Americans care that he’s sticking up for the monuments? If only he cared this much about real people as inanimate ones.

I will say this, I own commercial property and all of my tenants are small business. Even with govt assistance they were struggling to pay their bills, they needed to get back open to survive. It's a double edged sword, stay closed longer to hopefully be open safely but by that time you could be so far in your business will have to close. Some of these people have every dime they owned invested in their business. Closing could mean losing their houses and life savings. You have to respect that point of view regardless of how frustrating it may be to you.

The thing is, though, the Fed and Congress have (and have the ability to continue/expand) provided support for business to keep them whole in the interim.

Mortgages/Rent freezes should have been part of the first stimulus. It would have taken significant pressure off of businesses to try to rush to reopen, and would have ensure a more stable recovery.

Does Trump really think most Americans care that he’s sticking up for the monuments? If only he cared this much about real people as inanimate ones.

I mean it was already against the law to deface a statue or monument.....he’s acting like he INVENTED THE LAW!!! LAW AND ORDER!!!

Mortgages/Rent freezes should have been part of the first stimulus. It would have taken significant pressure off of businesses to try to rush to reopen, and would have ensure a more stable recovery.
Agreed, I think the PPP program was good, had some flaws but overall good. I think they should have put in provisions for land lords, like myself, to be able to give direct assistance to them as well. All my bills kept coming, mortgage , upkeep , taxes, repairs etc. I think it should have been a 6-8 month program really, opening is one thing, making up for lost time in a soft economy is another.

I’m on my phone and can’t look but I’m positive we were all bringing this up back then. You cannot leave it up to the business to decide. You’re going to harm the employees, and you’re going to increase cases.

which is exactly why we should have allowed temporary mortgage & rent freezes for everyone.

Edit: I see my guy BTB already ahead of me

I do respect that point of view as I have many friends in these situations. But it is short term thinking vs long term thinking. Reopening to soon is likely to have much longer and more devastating effects on the economy and people’s livelihoods. The government has the ability to keep us all above water until we had the virus under control.

The part that frustrates me is you can’t even introduce evidence that contradicts their point of view on this subject without it turning into a shit show. I don’t mind the point of view as I have the mental ability to see multiple sides of a subject. But a good many of them refuse to accept any evidence contrary to their mindset.
