This is my favorite of Carter's work on the whole album.
Truly can't even come close to having the taste in music that would prefer this busy hot garbage over the original feel. But to each their own.

I'm in complete agreement with what the other guy said. I think I legitimately started to get annoyed when I heard the "Clocks" drums during the chorus only because of all of the negative things I've read about it on here. Weird how psychology works that way.

It's been a while since I've heard anything about it, and now when I hear a version without the Clocks drumming, it bugs me and I need those extra snare hits to bring the energy.

Sorry you feel differently, but I feel like it provides much more needed energy to the chorus that isn't otherwise there. Also makes it more danceable.

And you say "original feel", but this is how Carter originally recorded the song...?

It's not how he originally played the song though...

I find the busy pattern less intrusive to the song overall on the studio version, it sounds substantially more aggressive live. I much prefer the live versions from @ 2013 to the versions from 2007 or 2018, but I really enjoy the album version and just wish we could have got a bonus disc with demos, outtakes and alternate versions to see if they recorded a version with the original drum pattern.

It's your lucky day - Carter just played it your way live at Raleigh.

Really enjoyed seeing this one again. Hadn’t seen it in a decade. Sounded great with the original chorus drums. Easier for Dave to sing over it seems.

    Carter is amazing.

If you play this track from 0:39, Carter hits the snare on the following counts in a 4/4.

From 0:39 (As soon as he says 'After, count 1')
    4
    4
    3
    4
    4
    4
    3
    4
    3
    4
    3
    4
    4
    End 1:02

It's the snare hits on 3 that is one of those things that differentiates Carter from most drummers. Most drummers will almost always hit the snare on 4.

A masterpiece of an example of this is studio Dreaming Tree.

Exactly! Glad you mentioned that because I was thinking the same thing as I was writing the post about Idea of You.

I wanted to do this same thing for Dreaming Tree but it would take too much time with the number of hits on the snare.

    Do it.

    I'll do Dreaming Tree eventually.

Yikes, the audio on that whole show is awful. It’s like they manufactured the crowd noise. Lots of good versions of Idea Of You out there, this isn’t one of them.

Live Trax is fine. It's the first time I heard it.

This one's good, too. May have been posted already, but in case not, here it is.

I like that one. Have you ever checked out the ‘06 versions? I posted one up above from the Gorge. I may be bias because I was there but I absolutely love that version. Very simple, Carter’s drumming is really prominent. Dave slightly screws up the bridge I believe but it’s still great. The debut at spac or whatever in 06 was good too. Curious if you like the older versions.

Sugar Will (03.06.2010) from Warehouse 10 Volume 1. The first chorus, it starts right at 1:40 with "Sugar ain't poison, but..." There is a time signature change to 7/8, and the drumming is fantastic on this version. The lyrics are also amazing here. Talking about heaven and shit (possible references to Roi/lost friend)

Wow. Was listening to the wrong version earlier. The lyrics in this version are amazing.

I hear what you're saying now. Thanks

Notice when he hits the bell on the ride.

Oh ok, yeah. I'm not sure if 'on the ride' is a technical phrase, but I don't think that's a bell. Drummers, please correct me, but I think that's just Carter hitting the center of one of the hi-hats to create that bell-type sound.

He's hitting the bell of a ride cymbal. See picture below or google ride cymbal bell and check out the images section. (drumming for 25 years )

Haha ok cool, so bell on the ride is a technical term. Thanks for the drum lesson! I learned something today.

Yeah man, it's really one of my favorite songs. I know a lot of people don't like it because of the "so good" lyrics, but whatever. So much greatness happening in that version

Re: 6. Idea of You (4:44)

Vinnie Colaiuta is probably my second favorite drummer after Carter. Going back to the fun snare hits Carter does on IOY, here is another favorite of mine to play by Sting with Vinnie drumming.

Also a question if anyone can help?

    https://youtu.be/YJiu-O5fNdU

    Time signature is 7/8

    Snare hits on

    3
    7
    3
    7
    2
    4
    6
    3
    5

Is the next snare on 5 AND or on 6? I can play this on the drums without a problem but struggle with actually writing it down correctly.

I figured I’d post it here since others piqued interest in the snare hits on IOy
