Re: Live Trax Vol. 54: Cow Palace (11/9/20)

This bootleg introduced me to improv lyric intro for Two Step and it blew my mind. I listened to that Two Step over and over and over again. Was also my first taste of a full band #41 that I could listen to regularly, the only other full band live #41 I'd heard was on Letterman. This bootleg was probably the tipping point that took me from huge fan to obsessed.

Keep in mind this was 1999 and the only live albums were Red Rocks and Luther College so hearing this at that time was about as exciting as it gets. I'm really excited for this but I can't say it's going to blow everyone away like it did me 21 years ago. I like to think it will, but you know how it goes.

So many people that have heard it say similar things. I haven't heard it so I'm excited to see if it lives up. I'm sure its great. It's tough for 96 dmb not to be. But if this one is in anyway special for the time period it will be a real treat.

I would say Hershey 04 (LT50) was the holiday release and they threw in Hollywood Bowl show on vinyl??? and cd for god knows why. While we're here, woulda loved to see some form of vinyl with 54. Either: 54 with a vinyl option, a "live release" on vinyl for the first time (new or old show), or an older LT on vinyl for the first time similar to how 35 was done.

Yes, but it’s missing some songs. I agree, the soundboard we already have is quite stellar. However, it’s such a phenomenal show, I’ll happily buy this to get a fully mixed version.

I’d say it is very special for the time period, based on the performances and energy. It’s one of my most listened to shows.

Perfectly said. That's precisely why it resonated so deeply with me back when I first listened to it, as well; I'd never heard a full band live version of several of these songs and this was such a treat for me at the time.

Over 100 releases later, we've been exposed to multiple live versions of everything that's on here, so I don't know if it's going to have that same mind-blowing ability that it did back then, but I do know it is a special show from their history and I'm really excited to hear a properly mixed and mastered version of it.

My second DMB show was just a few days earlier in Denver on Halloween night (10.31.96). That was also a spectacular show with a lot of energy, being Halloween night. Took several years before I was able to get the bootleg of that concert, but "caash" was available at the local record store after a while and I do recall getting that one and being a big fan of it.

Fall 1996 isn't a tour where I've ever gone through and listened to all of the recordings night in and night out. Maybe they were just tearing through each town they visited, maybe they were just especially hyped on Halloween and on a Saturday night in San Francisco (with a radio broadcast). Either way, this is a definite purchase from me.

Re: Live Trax Vol. 54: Cow Palace (11/9/20)

So excited for this release. Caash is a classic show with incredible performances. A friend gave me the bootleg in 2001, so I heard it late, but must have listened to it hundreds of times. Personal Top 3 favorite versions of LIOG, #41, and Two Step.

Dave is on fire the entire night, I think I remember the DMBAlmanac guys on the Grey Street pod talking about how back in the day he could just take over shows - this is one of them. Lots of improv and vocal gibberish littered throughout. I think it's the only time I've ever heard him sing improv over Boyd's LIOG solo, and it fits perfectly ("go lift my head above the clouds/you know it's no surprise/to breathe the air up above/and leave me in wonder, in wonder of life").

Roi is incredible on Recently and #41, the latter causing Dave to audibly "Whoa" as the song is ending. An absolute 8-minute powerhouse, and Roi absolutely destroys the climax.

Two Step is another highlight, both the intro ("I remember/A time when I was young and dreaming/Oh time it seemed long, but as it passed it slowed and rolled along/Now I find that things are quicker/each year and 10 or 20/flies right past as if I'm almost done") and the outro ("I need more life/need more time/celebrate we will/need more love/we climb on two by two").

Dave's voice finally gives out in the encore, and Carter carries the falsettos on I'll Back You Up and it's just...perfect.

Wonderful show, can't wait to finally hear it in full with a great mix.

You you please point me to where I can find the circulating version? Would like to see if it's worth the purchase! Thanks.

The bootleg, CAASH, is what is missing songs. The songs are also out of order on it.

I was wondering what the cover of CAASH looked like.
It was right there, on discogs:

    https://www.discogs.com/Dave-Matthew...lease/12904044

    So ‘90 look...

By the way, what does CAASH mean? Why CAASH?

It's using the text art template from "crash" (the album) but just replacing the r with a second a. Would have been very easy for basic photoshop to replace the letter and "caash" is about the only word you can make from those letters that still is a readable word. I've always just assumed it's that simple.

Incredible. You are right, I haven’t noticed that: it is exactly the same fonts from Crash, in an oval shape, they just changed a letter.
