If blows my mind that one of my fifth grade students can play the three notes in OSW on the alto saxophone better than Jeff

Yeah this is my only criticism of Jeff... those three notes. Roi made them flow so smoothly together, and Jeff makes each more its own entity.

I’m a fan of Rashawn. Tim is great when he’s turned down. If Tim played acoustic on at least 75% of songs, I’d be ecstatic.

I find myself enjoying listening to 2009-present DMB more than 90's DMB. I like hard rock, I like loud horns, I like fast songs. Listening to a 20 minute two step with a piano and sax solo bores me. Central Park Era is a close second.

I do love 09-present DMB, but I can't say I enjoy it more than the 90's. I applaud you sir for making such a bold statement. Prepare for the rain of fists that is bound to pour over you by the other ants.

The 20 minute sax and piano solo on Two Step exactly reminds me of the Central Park era. Not the biggest fan of that post-Busted Stuff era with Butch.

    Give me 95-00 and 04-12. Makes me think of LT1, 3, & 5 for 95-00 and LT 2, 8, & 15 for the latter.

I'll let the lovely ladies years walk.

if what I listen to in my car offends people that much, than yikes. I'm much more likely to put on Warehouse from Live At Citi Field than from Red Rocks 95 these days is all I'm saying. Plus I wasn't around in the 90's and that band and that sound have been dead for a long time. Just my two cents.

The horns on OSW definitely over-stay their welcome now. The other night on the live cast, they were brutal. Sounded slightly off key to me.

What part of the Central Park concert is overrated? It is the standard in which excellence is measured on so many songs. As in, it's really difficult to find a better live version of that particular song anywhere, ever.

Nothing wrong with thinking it's overrated if that's how you feel of course, I just can't imagine a fan of this band not immensely enjoying that particular evening that, in my opinion, was nothing short of a live music masterpiece.
It's mainly just a setlist issue for me tbh, the songs they played were performed well. iI should have stated that in my original post lol.

Songs like Too Much, When the World Ends, So Much to Say,Where Are You Going, could have been replaced by better songs . I understand a couple of those songs are DMB staples but still.

Yeah for 03 standards that was not that great of a set. Way better sets in 2003. Of corse that is the kind of a set you would expect for the situation. I miss that version of the band

I've never liked proudest Monkey, Cry Freedom, or DIDO, and it's the sole reason I have Crash below the other big two albums and lillywhite.

Also, Halloween sucks and the only reason most fans like it is that it's rare.

Oh, and no DMB song should stretch more than 10 minutes, even live and especially now.

    Out your damn mind.

I've said it before, DIDO might be the band's best studio track.

I don't hink it sucks, but it is the least casual listen in the DMB catalog. For my ears. In October of '94 is when I dug into the band and bought R2T and the Recently EP...and Halloween is that sore thumb in all of those songs. I think it's great because it is raw aggression and anger, something that rarely hear from Dave and it draws attention to the band's range and expressiveness.

This is not an unpopular opinion or anything, but I was talking to my wife a couple of months ago and realized that I'd amalgamated UtTaD and R2T into one album. I forget that OSW, STJL, Recently, and Seek Up are NOT in Under the Table. Clearly, the presence of Ants and Satellite are factors in this mental amalgamation of the albums, but I'd basically listen all the way through the two albums a ton. Often it would be back to back.

To another point in this thread: I love OSW, but definitely find the modern live versions a bit less subtle and graceful due to the horn arrangements.

It's like you're speaking another unintelligible language of myopic obtuseness. But then I remember that we all get to like what we like and shouldn't expect others to agree. I happen to love these songs, but you needn't and as such are not necessarily a myopic or obtuse person.

Well, you may be, but not based on this.

Oh, and don't mind me...I'm an asshole.

I think Tim has sounded really good so far this tour. I feel like they got the memo after 2016. He's seemed to be turned down and dialing back the over-the-top effects and wailing.

I'm not sure which is the popular vs. unpopular opinion on Rashawn. It seems to be pretty split. I'm personally way over the trumpet at this point, and this tour especially, it has taken a giant step to being even more front and center. Jeff has been increasingly minimized as a result, and we're getting a wailing trumpet solo on most songs. It doesn't sound good to me, at all. I used to like the subtle effects Rashawn would bring to certain songs, but now it's just overbearing. The absence of a violin makes it even more pronounced, and not in a good way.

There was no memo or that they finally "got it". The reason he was turned up/prominent is no longer playing with them onstage.

I am not a big fan of OSW full band - it just goes on too long and the horn line is too repetitive. I really like the Dave & Tim version though.

I for one actually love what Jeff does with that. It’s not nearly as emotional as Roi, but I’m glad Jeff kinda puts his own feel into it, and doesn’t simply try and replicate the way Roi did things. It still sounds great to me.

Early versions are amazing and have a funky, syncopated rhythm. And the intro with Roi was tops.

The addition of trumpet into that horn line made it way less subtle and it really takes away from the song. It’s honestly one of the only things I think the addition of trumpet fucked up

There's almost nothing that I feel is improved by the trumpet.

God bless Rashawn....great player, by all accounts a great dude, and crazy talented musician, but I just don't dig the trumpet sound with this band. I really dislike that he's taking the first solo in #41 right now (where Boyd would usually come in after "...splash all over you." Would much prefer they let Buddy take a solo there and then segue into the Sojourn interp.

I really dislike that he's taking the first solo in #41 right now (where Boyd would usually come in after "...splash all over you." Would much prefer they let Buddy take a solo there and then segue into the Sojourn interp.
I feel ya, and I get a lot people can do with out, but I just personally love the sound of a trumpet. Sometimes he cuts through to loud (looking at you OSW) and sometimes he doesn’t have the best solo (builds up and peeks too soon, so resorts to squealing lol) but for the most part, I love it. Especially when he plays more reserved and soft on the jazzy numbers. I love his solos on Proudest Monkey, that reprise of Captain on the Alpine bonus disc, and I’m actually loving his solos on #41 this year

I will say that the solo on #41 from the webcast Friday night (I don't really listen to tapes and haven't been to a show yet this tour so that was the first I've heard it) was much more subtle and melodic than what I'm used to from him, so I didn't necessarily hate it or anything, but just would prefer to hear Buddy take a solo there.

Yeah I feel you, it’s gonna take some getting used to without that crazy dude up there wailing on the fiddle

I wonder if they’ll play with the formulas a bit, or if they’re locked in already. Because I don’t think Buddy is feeling LIOG, he seemed to like, nod it off on the web cast
