Re: Share your unpopular DMB opinions.

I think Busted Stuff album was overrated big time. I love Bartender, Grey Street, and Raven but lots of blah for me. It gets placed as #4 way too much when ranking studio albums.

Obviously, the bands earlier work with Lillywhite is classic and all of that. Developed their sound, fleshed them out and made good albums. The production is good, the songs are great.

Cavallo got to them at a re-beginning in a way. And Big Whiskey is a great album, it re-captured them, like Lillywhite did originally; but I think Cavallo did it better though.

So with what DMB is now, I think Cavallo is better at capturing the bands current sound in the studio than Lillywhite was originally. In my opinion, you can put your favorite Cavallo studio track against most any favorite Lillywhite studio track and notice.

I also think Cavallo makes them sound better (sonically) in the studio than Lillywhite. Cavallo nailed the tracks he produced on Come Tomorrow.

I will add, Away From The World is my least favorite DMB album by far.

Big Whiskey is a really good album.

I remember how much I loved BW when it first came out. Subsequent tours pounding the songs into the ground (and the fact that, for the most part, they didn't really expand/change/jam too much on them live) really burned it out for me.

A month or so ago I realized I hadn't actually sat down and truly listened to that album in years. I sat down and played the vinyl front to back and was just like "Damn, this really was an excellent album." It sounded fresh again after so long. The band was really invigorated and Carter is just a flat-out, absolute BEAST on it.

For me its as simple as.. old school dmb fit perfectly with SL.

This age of DMB fits perfectly with Cavallo.

Not even close for me. I was okay with it on R2T, but didn't really love it. I heard it at most of my early shows and don't need to hear it again.

From a few days of reading these boards...

AFTW is better than CT, BW, and BS.

(To clarify, it doesn’t come close to a finished LWS, which is NOT the same as BS).

Drive In, Drive Out might be my favorite studio song of theirs. Just absolutely perfectly recorded and mastered.

I love how clearly you can hear Carter say "That....was bad as SHIT!" at the end of DIDO on the vinyl reissue.

Studio DIDO is the perfect fusion of DMB at their studio and live best. No idea why it doesn't get way more love on these boards.

    Nice breakdown.

I think one of the things is that for the first two albums pretty much all of songs existed before UtTaD was recorded. Even BTCS had a few songs that existed before they went into the studio. So the band was ready to track these songs and Lillywhite had an impressive resume (still does). Dave was also going through a hard time which helped sour the LWS. Bringing Steve back made some sort of sense, but it was never going to be the same.

Cavallo has had the advantage of getting them with only brand new OR new-ish tracks that he could help them develop and capture. Rob is also a musician, and I think that helps him...and the musicians he works with. He's also not weighed down by the expectations of previous work. The LWS had the burden of trying to follow "the big three" and AFtW was supposed to be a return to that form in some sense. Rob was allowed to just make an album with the guys.

And I agree, that he's probably the best fit for them moving forward, if they choose to continue that relationship. That said, and I can't believe I'm typing this, Batson's contributions to this album are fantastic. That's a relationship that has aged well...if you like the new album. I really like the new album.

Unpopular opinion: Carter should play a lot more subtle and not powerhouse it on most songs.
Unpopular opinion: The horn section needs to go away so the jams don't sound like cruise ship music. Sax alone for most songs would be fine and Rashawn should be used sparingly.

Don't need nor want to hear Ants at another Dave show. I know I will, but 9x is enough. I've also enjoyed nine Two Steps, but would love to hear more of those.

It's a great tune, but they've got so much better stuff. They've always brought something "new" or at least different to each album and I appreciate the variety.

But I'm the guy that wouldn't want to hear Stairway, Rock N Roll, Black Dog, or Moby Dick at a Zeppelin show. I want deep cuts...but only from the "good" albums, as determined by yours truly.

Also, I knew from when I first heard it on R2T that is was going to be an anthem for the band. It's inclusion on Crash made it a reality

It was their first party drinking "woo-hoo" song, like Jimi Thing and the pot reference. I don't do the partying/drinking thing, I just want to hear the band play and not get puked on. Maybe I did the like to "feel better for a small time", but you can't prove anything. And it was rarely for a small time.

    Who said that?!?!

Cant Stop in 06 was good, its was even better 2012-14, the sped up way too busy version on the album ruined the song for me.

I'm not saying its a great song, its not top 30 DMB, but if I go to a 2 nighter and they play You and Me and I sit there and listen and hug my wife I walk away super happy. Cheesy happy love songs are perfectly awesome from time to time.

I debated buying a turntable solely for that album on vinyl.

Unpopular - Reshawn Ross & Tim Reynolds should be nixed from band. They add nothing to the sound of the band in my opinion.

    - Halloween is a terrible song

    - Carter overplays too much, needs to let it breathe sometimes

    - Shake Me Like a Money is an awesome fucking song

    - Jeff Coffin > LeRoi

    - Come Tomorrow is the worst album DMB has produced

    - Butch Taylor sucks, but I actually still want him back.

    - Butch Taylor > Buddy

    Ok, that felt good!
