Seriously though... I'd love to see them out there handing out carts and working cash registers. I caught a bit story on the news last night that a lady may lose her franchise (and I can't remember what store it was) b/c she's refused to open on Thanksgiving night. That's ridiculous.

this. I'd for sure LOVE to see my CEO out here on Thanksgiving, even for an hour or two, directing customers and showing some sort of solidarity, but it's so far out of the realm of possibilities we have a better chance of SNL being funny again than that happening.

Honestly I feel major retailers are flirting with the line of backfiring. I would have to think if they push it much earlier, you won't see the gigantic lines at the doors like you do now. Hopefully it backfires this year.

And really, with the way the online shopping world is taking over, I can't really see Black Friday being a thing for more than the next ten years or so.

to be honest i dont feel bad for the workers. I work for a hotel. I am working tomorrow. When you decided to work in retail or the service industry you know what you are getting yourself into. I get to choose ten holidays a year. I use two holidays for the Gorge. That makes up for me having to come to work tomorrow

this, especially seasonal employees. If you sign up for a seasonal job at JCP, Kohls, Gap/Old Navy etc you're guaranteed to have to work Black Friday. it's not even negotiable.

I feel bad for them, but I also feel bad for people in your industry. My sister writes for a newspaper and she works all night Thanksgiving day so her paper can go out Friday morning, and I feel bad for her. I even feel bad for emergency personnel that have to give up Thanksgiving to be on call, or whatever the situation is. If you really think about it, there's tons of lines of work that require working on days like Christmas or Thanksgiving. And you're absolutely right when you say that you knew what you were getting into. Doesn't make it suck any less.

And yes, I work at a major retailer and will be working a 14 hour shift tomorrow.

its a tradition. I get xmas off my coworker gets thanksgiving. go a strip club every year for turkey and tis with some buddie. food really good.

Yea i mean shit sucks but it is the choices we make. It doesnt matter to me as much as some since my family is nowhere near where i work. I am actually excited to have a stress free day at work tomorrow, watch football all day then be one by 6:30

Am I the only one on the planet who really wouldn't mind working on Thanksgiving (except retail, that shit is horrible)? If I was going to be in town for the holiday and someone needed coverage at the gym or if I had to spend a few hours at the office getting important things done, I wouldn't really care.

My family also doesn't really start festivities until 1:00 in the afternoon or so, either, so that might have something to do with it.

I have to do it sometimes (as Jon pointed out, it's the nature of the industry). I really don't mind. I just demand, or bribe, my way into getting the opening shift so I can be at my Dad's by 3 for the Cowboys game. Or if I have to close, I'll bribe the opener into staying till 7 so I can watch the game with my Dad.

basically i live in dc now. My family all lives in either florida or California. For my job i know i have to work thanksgiving. Because of that i dont get to travel and be with family on the thanksgiving. So i am not going to cook for two (besides not being able to cook i wouldnt do it) so there iwas a strip club a block and a half from my apartment and one year me and my boy from utah just went there. It was awesome so we made it a tradition with more and more people who didnt go home and wanted to look at tits while eating turkey coming with us. It is so much fun.
