How to go about getting 11 year old son into DMB.

So my son is going with me to the Dayton show. It will be his first concert ever, and he's excited. His Mom wasn't going to let him go on a school night, and he himself was quite adamant that he be allowed to go. So I'm really looking forward to this, and he's definitely old enough now.

Get him a playlist going? Show him live videos? Prioritize the songs he's most likely to hear? So far the only bands that I listen to that he seems to have taken an interest in are The Killers and Muse.

No clue how to get him more into it but I will say, if he’s into the Killers, definitely try to make one of their shows at some point, they’re great live.

One option is to not have him listen to anything before the show. Let the whole experience be new and after the show, see what songs stuck with him, and go from there.

Yeah, that’s probably the way to go

Thank you for starting this. Been wondering what the "next generation" of dmb would be. Saw Bruce in the Hartford lawn, I'm the half generation of dmb.

    10th Avenue Freeze Out.

I would put on a studio album. Probably Crash.

I would definitely have him listen to some studio albums.

My wife had a hard time getting into DMB shows because she couldn’t understand what he was singing. But once she started listening to albums, she got more into it.

No idea if lyrics will matter to your son, but that’s my input. I think if he even went in with little exposure to the band he’d still have a blast!

Hey I saw my first show when I was 11! I'll suggest what worked for me, and that's show him the Central Park Concert. It'll knock his socks off.

i've had some friends go with me recently for their first shows. i made a spotify playlist of songs that are more likely to be played so they can get familiar with some of what they'll hear. hearing some songs he is familiar with will probably help keep him into the show. he doesn't need to know about songs like the last stop and captain. also, ask him what he likes about certain songs or music in general. if he really likes the horns, then find songs or performances that are more horn heavy.

Hey OP - DMB is a good enough band live that they will blow his young mind live.

After that - on the way home - listener supported.

Let the show speak for itself. This is a common question for many fans trying to get their children, spouses, and friends into the band. But really the live show will either speak volumes more than any playlists and if anything, the live show will get him more curious to listen to more DMB.

I have been a DMB fan since I was a teenager in 2005 but didn't go to my first show until 2012 simply because it took a friend to invite me after I had objections about the frat party culture at the Hartford venue and in an era (2005-2010) where I was being pulled musically in 14 different ways the studio tracks alone didn't convince me to go to a DMB show. But going to Hartford N1 in 2012 and hearing that stone opener sealed the deal.

I hope you guys have a great time and hope he enjoys his first DMB show.

I took my daughter to her first DMB show last year at 9 and her second this year at 10. Her favorite DMB songs are Grey Street, Bartender, Pig, and Big Eyed Fish. I pretty much just have the DMB station on in my car and one of the Warehouse CD's in the disc player so she was exposed just driving around with me. Live, she was really into the crowd stuff like the Thank You after SDL and Can't Help Falling in Love at the end of the Stone. She's pretty quick to pick up lyrics though and was singing along to parts of What Would You Say and Pay For What You Get.

I would definitely pay for seats. Be prepared for bathroom breaks and definitely buy some "fair" food like pretzels or donuts or popcorn. Probably not needed in the arenas but paying for the VIP section in the amphitheater was nice. You get a quieter place to sit and eat a snack before heading back into the crowd and the bathrooms are super nice, ha. Just a suggestion if you hit an amphitheater next summer.

If you want to play something beforehand, I agree with Sarah, you should play Crash or another studio album. I forget how hard it is to understand Dave sometims. And then maybe your favorite live Watchtower or Two Step which I always find to be impressive. Even my son, who would rather listen to Ozzy Osborne or Alice Cooper, finds Dave's "late" note hold in Watchtower impressive.

Oh and bring ear plugs or ear protection. Again, not sure how loud the arena would be but my daughter appreciated the ear protection.

I've always just played DMB in the truck when my kids are with me. Took both my 7 year old daughter and 4-1/2 year old son to Deer Creek this year. Needless to say my son has been obsessed with the band since we went. I think he likes the actual instruments more than the actual songs, well he loves Samurai Cop, one time at the store he was singing "your mother pushes you" pretty loud down the isles. Hilarious.
