Re: How to go about getting 11 year old son into DMB.
I took my daughter to her first DMB show last year at 9 and her second this year at 10. Her favorite DMB songs are Grey Street, Bartender, Pig, and Big Eyed Fish. I pretty much just have the DMB station on in my car and one of the Warehouse CD's in the disc player so she was exposed just driving around with me. Live, she was really into the crowd stuff like the Thank You after SDL and Can't Help Falling in Love at the end of the Stone. She's pretty quick to pick up lyrics though and was singing along to parts of What Would You Say and Pay For What You Get.
I would definitely pay for seats. Be prepared for bathroom breaks and definitely buy some "fair" food like pretzels or donuts or popcorn. Probably not needed in the arenas but paying for the VIP section in the amphitheater was nice. You get a quieter place to sit and eat a snack before heading back into the crowd and the bathrooms are super nice, ha. Just a suggestion if you hit an amphitheater next summer.
If you want to play something beforehand, I agree with Sarah, you should play Crash or another studio album. I forget how hard it is to understand Dave sometims. And then maybe your favorite live Watchtower or Two Step which I always find to be impressive. Even my son, who would rather listen to Ozzy Osborne or Alice Cooper, finds Dave's "late" note hold in Watchtower impressive.
