Ann Marie Simpson and she apparently guested back in 2018.

I don’t know if she’s interested in joining the band, but I’d settle for the fall tour.

I was thinking my days of shows were at an end. If they were to bring her on, that would completely change things.

I came on to say the same thing. That was really special. Full chills! And it wasn’t just catharsis from missing the fiddle - she is very good and stepped into that solo w/ a ton of confidence. I Hope she comes back, and if I had my druthers, in some more permanent fashion.

Was up in the cheap seats at the bowl, and was blown away. Not only to hear that part again, but to hear it played so well, so technically proficiently, was something I didn't know I needed.

I never thought I’d feel that way during ants again. This is why I got into the band. Would love to hear more of her. Would love if she joined for real

Wasn't in person but interviewed 2 fans tonight who loved her. A 3rd fan messaged me and said the ants was the best west coast treat he has seen in years. But lets keep in mind Anne has 2 twins around the age of 5 and her husband Mike plays with Incubus. Even regional appearances out west at this critical age may be a deal breaker for her giving how valuable this time can be being local for the kids with 2 parents in music.

Also for all we know maybe she hasn't been formally offered a full time or regional guest spot with DMB. She would have been 1 year removed from childbirth the year Boyd was cute without the E (cut from the team) so IDK what happened but I did hear rumors that she auditioned back then. But to ask a mother to travel to 40+ shows across country in a grueling tour schedule is different than her picking up local gigs in LA or California here and there.

Do you guys actually believe the band still wants a violin or that this happening is in any way within the realm of reality?

    Re: Sign her up

The band has known Anne for far longer than Dave has been affiliated with Rockbridge. She contributed to the recording sessions for Stand Up. She's a world class musician, and many, including myself, were really hoping she'd step into Boyd's role when the news Boyd was leaving first broke in 2018.

    https://www.antsmarching.org/forum/s...4&postcount=50

I think it was made pretty clear that Dave did not want another violin back after Boyd. He was trying to separate the band from that sound - so I believe it's highly unlikely offers went out to for a violin gig with the band in 2018 (despite some rumors that this was the case).

In 2018, there was a poster on here that insisted for months that the band would have a guest violinist during the tour at the Hollywood Bowl. It turned out to be a full/close to full orchestra (Anne was part of that orchestra), but my recollection is she did not end up soloing like she did on Ants last night back in 2018. Would love for her to join but seems like a dream:

DMB needs the violin back, they can still keep Buddy but it was so refreshing to hear AM as intended. What a moment, what a night; the end of WYA was also sick. Can’t wait for tonight, bring everybody back and let’s jam some more.

Ants is mediocre at best without a violin. So many songs would be improved with a violin. It’s a shame they didn't fill that role.

that would seem to be very much so the best possible path: to really connect with Buddy for many years and eventually write, record and release an album with him as a full member of the band; and then after that, possibly reconvene with a new violin/fiddle musician!!

I've long thought that one of the reasons they didn't immediately get a replacement fiddle player is because the Boyd comparisons would be incessant and constant when it was clear, from a DMB INC. branding perspective, that they wanted to get him out of sight and out of mind. But nearly 5 years later....maybe it's time. Please, Dave?

Nice to hear a violin hitting the right notes!

Had a 2007 performance come up on shuffle the other day, think it was Grey Street and YIKES Boyd. Don’t miss him at all.

I still don't see it happening. This seems like it was a cool sort of one off thing to do as part of the tour closer shows, but I'm not expecting any other additions to the band lineup.

If it was a 1-off thing, it was a bad idea. Bc it reminds us all how great they USED to sound and then they go back to shredding electric guitar solos and squeel-fest horn back and forths. They need to get her in.

I've watched it at least 6 times this morning and get chills during the ending jam every single time. THAT'S THE SOUND that made me fall in love with this band 28 years ago. That sax and violin interplay that was so different than everything else on alt rock radio at the time. I was 11 then, 39 now, and THAT SOUND just hits me in the feels. The more I think about it, the madder I get how Boyd fucked the whole thing up (quality of play before the sock incident) and how much different these last 5 years could have been musically for the band. I love what Buddy has brought....but that fiddle sound is what made DMB DMB, and it's ingrained in my musical bones.

Absolutely. They sound pretty good currently but they could be great. It's why I go to only 1 show a year and don't get too excited for tours. Such a bad decision to not replace the violin.

Ann Marie also married the founder of Rockbridge just as the company was starting (hence the same surname) and studied improvisation under John D'Earth while at UVA.

    She's a pretty great fit!

Has anyone ever thrown out the idea that maybe Dave never wanted a violin? Didn't Boyd guest at the start? He wasn't an original member of the band correct? The unique violin sound helped make the band popular and at that point there was no turning back even if Dave didn't like the violin? And then Boyd's troubles gave Dave a reason to remove him from the band and go with the current rock sound? Didn't know if that's ever be talked about....
