The Beauty of Stand Up

It gets a lot of hate, but it fit in very nicely on my "Fun & Happy" playlist. All the songs are feel good, fun or happy.

It has a rawness about it that is nice too. It's got the mellow feel of the first three albums, but the pop sensibilities of Everyday.

Love it! My favorite DMB record.

If you enjoy it, is it truly crappy? What are your definitions?

I unironically love the songs Angel and Smooth Rider. I fully acknowledge they are crappy songs. Probably took Dave a combined 10 minutes to write , but I enjoy them.

Agree overall with your sentiment, but those descriptions definitely do not apply to OOMH. lol

But I really like OOMH. Underrated song.

There is a very strong likelihood that he didn’t write the majority of the lyrics to either of those songs.

I like some of the songs from Stand Up, but the album itself is bad. I wish we could get an updated studio version of Die Trying.

It's kind of nurturing. Almost like a RH song.

But, you're right, it doesn't fit my criteria for a happy album or sad album. DMB was my first favorite band, so I feel I owe it to them to have a full album on my playlist.

Perhaps I'll go with AFTW. Lots of feel good and fun songs on there. No outright happy ones, but it's def a very chill album.

Musically a number of Stand Up songs sound really great live, I think. As long as you ignore the lyrics. It's the recordings and the production that I just can't listen to anymore. I slogged through it back in 2005 because it was the new album, but I much prefer to listen to those songs live and I struggle to listen to the album.

Except Everybody Wake Up. That is one of the worst songs I've ever heard in my life. I cannot believe that song (and Mother Father) came out of this great band.

I'd say that I find no beauty in the album. Maybe the end jam of American Baby. Nice lil Roi.

It's also not a complete dynamic range mess from a purely audio perspective, so I guess that was good.

I like many of these songs live, but I tried listening to the album the other day and just couldn’t help but skip through almost every song.

In my 40 + years of listening to music I have never listened to an album by a band I like and hated it as much as Stand Up. It's a really band attempt at assembling a group of songs. The effort wasn't there. Sure, I enjoy some of the songs live and there were good ideas, but its a subpar effort.

It's funny, I was in early college when Stand Up came out and I really enjoyed it at the time - there was an abundance of booze in my life then so that might have impacted my view. The boards overwhelmingly hated it so that skewed my opinion, I started hating it as well. Years later... I never sit down and listen to any one album beginning to end, just songs I'm feeling at the moment; Stand Up songs get played like 3 to 1 now when compared to Big Whiskey or Away From the World. Just saying.

Objectively, Stand Up might be the worst DMB album in terms of whatever you want to use for your definition, but those tunes get played more from me than the other two. :

Awesome that fans had the opportunity to ask Mark about DMB. Hopefully he didn't catch the red glare of anyone else involved.

Album is unlistenable and literally never in rotation. Live, the songs are OK. But the album itself is literally the furthest thing from sounding anything close to the first 3 albums OP.

There's literal machine guns on ABI

Alright, I concede. It sucks. I'm in denial.

Both Phish and DMB suck, I need a new favorite band.

I'm all for subjective opinions. I'm also all for this level of snark.

what rawness? It was the most polished album it could possibly be. A good number of the songs are just plain dour. There are a few good ones there, but overall... that is just a sentiment that A Pimp Named Slickback cannot co-sign.

The only redeeming part of stand up is Roi, he's phenomenal on the album and maybe trouble with you. Everything but maybe four songs should be sitting on a shelf.

This is my biggest problem with it. Vocals are atrocious too

I wish we'd gotten Lillywhite-level production on "Trouble With You." As it stands, one of the few worthwhile tracks from that period. Better than most of the Stand Up album.
