Where's Carter in Crash video?

Sorry, I'm sure this is old news (couldn't find a thread on it though), but just saw the official music video for Crash Into Me for 1st time in decades (literally) and Carter (or at least his face) seems to never be shown? Was he on vacation or did anyone ever find out why he's not in the video? Just curious, it's the only video where a main band member is absent, right?

That's interesting. I remember watching the DVD for all the music videos called The Videos, and each one had some director's commentary if you wanted. Been forever since I watched that but I seem to remember them saying something about Leroi feeling shy on the Crash Into Me video and not wanting to do too much, even though his face is shown a good number of times. But I don't recall the mention of Carter at all.

Might have to find that DVD with the commentary again to see if it's brought up.

Thanks, would be very cool if there was a comment about why he's missing! And overall is that a good collection with the directors commenting? Sounds really interesting!

Yeah they don't mention him at all in the commentary. Talks about Boyd's violin skirt, wardrobe, spontaneously hiring the two waitresses from lunch to be the geishas, no real storyboarding of the video just all winging it...

It's a beautiful video, makes sense about no real storyboarding. That's funny about the waitresses! I like when the "geishas" are being pulled forward on something with wheels on either side of Dave and one falls off, good that they kept that in. Also liked Boyd's violin skirt, Stefan's bass in the water, and Roi looked super cool even if he wasn't feelin' it.

So Carter missing is still a mystery then!

I have a vague memory of hearing/reading that Carter was sick on the day of this shoot, but I could be making that up.

He was either sick or had a family emergency. He did miss the entire shoot and I remember hearing he was super bummed about it at the time. I feel like it was mentioned in the pop-up video back in the day. I think you are correct and he was sick though.

I guess the mystery is solved then... too bad he was either sick or had an emergency. I did notice the foot shot of someone with a drum - I'm sure that was their way of shouting him out.

Yeah, I think you're right about it being on Pop-Up Video. I completely forgot about those! I wonder if there's a way to watch them these days.

i remember in the 90s VH1 had a show called pop up videos where they'd give info or commentary to a video as it was playing....the crash video just said that the drummer didn't want to appear in it because he thought the focus should be on dave.

crash, ddtw and crush are probably their best videos visually...all done by the same director, dean something

I remember Pop Up Videos, I loved that show, it's always interesting to me to hear the behind-the-scenes details. I don't remember seeing this one on that, but that show had a lot of good tidbits!

Also agree that those are great videos, I love Crush especially because of how it's filmed and how the look & feel of the video is SO in line with the feel of the song.

Thanks for the great memory you have and sharing that maybe Carter didn't want to do it, wanted focus on Dave (which is interesting because Dave is usually most people's first focus in DMB things...)
