How do you know that people are only aloud to go to 1/2 shows at the military academy? and also my friend thinks he can get tickets from my other friend(who goes to west point) from his fellow students. I know thats a little confusing but do you think he will be able to even get tickets? Or will tickets only be given out with school id.

Re: Ants Podcast - Episode 5

To ensure that more people read this post:

After listening to Podcast 5, I was not surprised to hear that the top voter getter so far only has 500 or so votes. Think about it, DMB, D&F and D&T have played 1949 shows together since 1989 and you want the ants community, of which 126,00+ have register with this site to come together to pick one show for the Warehouse to release as a LiveTrax. Because there is no structure to the voting, (everyone picks what they think are the best), there will never be a clear winner. Its like asking America to pick the next president and allowing them to pick any past or present politican. There is no way that America would come up with a clear answer.

So here is the solution to the problem. You need to do the voting by year. Put the top 10 shows each year in a poll and have ants vote on it. Then after all the years have been completed, put the top 10 vote getters, regardless of year in one last poll, in random order, and allow everyone to vote for one show only. The results should be sent to the Warehouse and the Warehouse and DMB fans will be handsomely rewarded.

Matt and Jake have good intentions, but this board couldnt even decide on what officially released album is the best out of the ones that we already have. 1/3 would say LT1, 1/3 would say Central Park and 1/3 would say RR95. Then people would say they like rare shows and go Hartford LiveTrax. And thats only about 15 albums or so. Now pick among the 1000s of shows of which atleast 80% of people on this site havent heard atleast 90% of those shows. Its never going to happen, so we need an intervention. Narrow it down folks. I wish someone other than me took a statistics class in college, geez!
If you think about it, in the last week, 4,500 different people sign in to antsmarching.org. Thats out of the 15,000 different people that have 5 or more posts. Meaning that over 100,000+ people that register on this website have 5 or fewer post and thus can not be counted on to vote for a LiveTrax.

So from there, you can deduct that there are about 4,500 people "active" ants on this website. Now, out of the 4500 people that are active, 500 of them pick a particular show, thats about 10% of the total active ants community that voted for the show with no structure in place. Thats amazing! And thats assuming that all the 4500 active ants went and voted for the shows that they would buy.

So clearly, 500 votes show OVERWHELMING support for a show and would lead to significant revenue for the Warehouse and happiness for ants. I think that Jake and Matt are unrealistic about the number of shows that should be voted for and I hope that I shed some light on this topic for my fellow ants. In addition, everyone that is going to vote for these LiveTrax would have already done so. Nobody is holding out, there is not going to be so new influx of fans that have listened to a bunch of shows or been fans since the beginning. The results are in and hopefully someone that has taken a statistics class will properly analyze the votes, instead of having unrealistic expectations!
Another note, take a look at the number of "people", not number of votes casted in general, that have voted. Take the number of votes that a show got and then divide it by the number of people that have voted. Also thinking that there will be a clear winner is very wrong due to the unstructured voting process in place at antsmarching.org
One additional request, I like to see the list of the shows that I have voted for. Thanks.

I'll respond more clearly soon, but PLEASE do not assume that just because someone doesn't have any posts, that they do not partake in other areas of the site. There are MANY more people that use other areas of the site, than use the forums.

My apologies, but it definitely irks me when people think message boards = website. We're SO much more than these boards. And thank God.

Really enjoyed the most recent podcast gentlemen. I enjoy the friendly banter that the two of you do. Gives the feeling that we are listening to a private converstation between two friends. Although I disagree with you two about the full band Some Devil, I applaud you for not censoring your feelings about the bands music. For some people who run a bands fan website, they might not be as bold as they two of you.

The possible release of the Pep Rally show as a LT idea was interesting. I could see it happening, just not sure how well recieved it might be by the masses. I am sure it would sell well among America's Finest.

One question: Jake was going a period by period review of the bands history. Has there been any talk of maybe incorporating any of the past or future posts into the podcast? I enjoyed the posts immensly, but I would love to hear Jake talk about the different periods in greater depth then maybe has writen about, if possible.

Again, thanks for the podcasts. They are great and inciteful.

While I certainly can imagine there are more participants/members of the site than just regular posters on the forum, I can't imagine a single show (or even a couple) getting an overwhelming number of the votes...not when there are so many shows from which to choose. That's just my thoughts as an outsider looking in...

I so like the podcasts a lot so far. Jake's articles on the band's history were great and I would love to hear something like that incorporated into the podcast.

I also think that little stories about the histories of various songs would be interesting and informative...such as #34, Blue Water, etc...

    Just an idea.

I'd be interested in some of the "behind the scenes" of Everyday...if there is anything to tell. Since you did the big write-up on LWS and all, it'd be great to hear the story of the album that replaced the LWS officially. I mean, the band was saying Everyday was the greatest thing ever and all. It'd be interesting to hear the whole story of that one. They scrapped the LWS and then Dave essentially writes an entire new album without them in a week's time. I have to wonder what the rest of the band really had in mind when they flew out west to hear everything...

there's nothing to tell. Dave played chords, said a few lines he had laying around forever, Ballard masturbated all over them, they produced the musical equivalent of a clotheshanger abortion.

Thanks for the info Jake. I, along with the just everyone else here, thoroughly enjoyed the other articles about the band in there infancy. Having 'discovered' the band in 1995, it was great to read about everything that had happened prior to my time.

The individual song discussions should be great. So many people are interested in the meanings behind the songs, any incite into that would be awesome.

Another podcast discussion idea, why the hell do the emicons keep getting rearranged?

That was hilarious. Truth be told though, the abortion failed. Everyday was born even after all of that.

Trust me, it's a must have piece of software and it'll play the podcasts. I use Winamp more often, but VLC is very handy for some file types that Winamp can't cope with.

I was operating on a backup laptop for the podcast, plus Guitar Hero 3 just came out that day. Needless to say, we were in a hurry to kick this episode out. We'll talk about it this upcoming weekend for sure.
