Great Unintentional/Improv Lines

I've been listening to some of the Grey Streets from 2000 and various other improv/slip up songs and I've found that Dave has (or at least had) a knack for some really good improv lines that just really hit home in their respective versions.

Examples:

Grey Street 7/12/2000
"Oh my man, flowers bloom in the desert
only hope can come from that
oh and worn down in your worry
only love and light"

Grey Street 8/27/2000
"Lonely down in the heart now
and believe her, she's been right
walked up and told her not to worry
but believe her, yeah say light"

    #41 - 4.20.02

    I was flying through space
and I knew it was a dream
    because I'd never flew before
and the stars were going past me
and the planets were going past me
and I knew it was a dream
    because I'd never flew before
I went further and further away until I saw this tiny blue planet
and something made me want to go there
and I thought it was a dream
    because I never flew before
and I went down to this little planet
and there I found the greatest band in the universe
    Béla Fleck and the Flecktones

    #41 - 4.20.02

    Love satisfies
I believe that God has his eye on
I believe the word, son of my high
I believe in God has his eyes on
I believe the words never'll go bad
even without the thought, be prepared to fly
many thousands more with love in our heart...
we could save the world, you and me God
son of great, it'll be there
and you and me will save every little babe, the way...
I believe God has his own plan
and I believe that we should vow, every woman, man may go live on...

Definitely *had*, haven't heard anything special in the last few years. The old improv Two Step intros were my fucking favorite though, any time I get even a semblance of an original Two Step intro, I get really excited. (time bomb intros excluded)

    I'll never see you again
That's the way it goes my friend
    I'll never see you again
That's the way it goes my friend
Miss the way you laugh haha
    The way you laugh
I miss the way you smile
    It's by my side forever
    I'll never see you again
That's the way it goes my friend
I want you back alive again
    Again I'll let you live
I want to get it high with you
    I roll up away
I wanna be afraid of what I'm gonna see
I'll never see you again my friend
That's the way it's gotta be

    I'll never see you again
    I'll never see you again
I'll never see you no more
    You wander away
I'll never see you no more
I don't wanna go that way
    Woman that you left
    Will be by me again
But I'm never gonna see you again
And that's the way it goes my friend

    Trouble it drives you mad
    Trouble it'll make you crazy
    Trouble it'll take your heart
    Until you can't see
Trouble it will make you try
To look like someone that you can't be
    Trouble will make you tired
    Trouble gonna make you crazy
    I'll never see you again
    I'll never see you again
That's the way it's gotta be my friend
    Never see you again

Some would pray to the stars
Some would pray 'til your high
Sound of hope that would last
    I'll never see you again
    I'll never see you again
    I'll never see you again
    Never see you again, no
    I'll never see you again

    7.16.2016 - Kill The Preacher
I'm gonna kill that preacher man
I'm gonna put him down in his grave
    he made my baby promises
    he stole my baby's innocence

I'm gonna kill that preacher man
I'm gonna put him down in his grave
I'm gonna kill that preacher man
I'm gonna kick him with my boot, make sure he's dead

If it's the last thing I do
may be the wrong step to take
may be (the) wrong choice I do
but it's the choice that I have made

So I'm gonna kill that preacher man
kick him with my boot, make sure he's dead

    #41 opener at Chicago Caravan

    Outro Lyrics
I wanna thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you
    for making me feel alright
for making me feel so good tonight
thank you, thank you, wanna thank you, thank you
    for making me feel alright
for making me feel so good tonight

we're going to back it over and try to make a good time for y'all
try to make a good time for y'all

Pretty basic lyrically but flows so well with the outro. Wish Dave sang that every time

Agreed. The music may be more or less the same, but the songs are infinitely different, with Mansfield Jam being way, way better.

Crazy Easy from 7/16/04 (WH 8, Vol. 8) flows nicely and has some interesting lyrics.

    “Maybe everybody's got it rough...
    everybody's got it tough...
But why do I feel like the world's dancing on me?”

    One of my favorites.

Somehow, I head up to the clouds
    Hoping God
    Is watching us
    Then a force
    Will bring some
Wind, rose up and took my feet off
    Wondering why
    Above the clouds
    Among the stars
    Where is heaven lost?
    Or behind the moon
    Somewhere there
    Is there really room
For [? one/old ?] God to stare down
    [? in a fancy robe ?]
Seems to me the idea that
He would be paying attention to us
    Kinda diminishes the whole idea
Of God in the first place
Oh, what if we were just a small
Mosquito dream lying among them all
Pretend a blade of grass is just as tall
The greatest, so why must you work for it?

One of my favorite slip-ups on the 6/19/00 #41. Doesn't necessarily look that great on paper, but was sung with a ton of passion. Check the tape if you haven't already.

    6/19/2000 alternate lyrics

    [Lyric Change-up]
    Please
    I dreamt you are
    and know you are
I know this winter’s still hard on you
    and though you are
    rolling time
oh but something why yes it come
oh, and then I will lay
    love lie down
oh just enjoy the shadows of life
    oh then wait
and no oh yeah jealous oh
    yes, up on crazy right

Meant 2012. Kill The Preacher is a structured, planned song that spurned from Mansfield Jam.

Intro to Gravedigger on 2.26.07. Probably my favorite Dave lyrics ever:

    I look at the stars
    I soon wonder this
I can't see you, but can you see me lord?
    Shining above me
I can't see you, can you see me, lord?

    I look at the sun
I wonder God are you there?
Watching us all, lying in despair
I watch the stars and I wondered, the lord --
Is he up above taking care of us all?

I look at the mountains and when they were built
Were they by the hands of some heavenly guild

    I don't believe, I can't understand
    I don't believe that you're watching me

Am I your dream or are you mine, lord?
Am I your dream or are you mine?

Am I your hope or are you mine, lord?
Am I your dream or are you mine?

That crazy easy was so good, the taper pull sounds better than the warehouse disc. That version just sounds so tight and polished, it's head scratching as to why that didn't stick. That whole show is phenomenal, if you haven't check it out.

    I don't believe that you're watching me

Am I your dream or are you mine, lord?
Am I your dream or are you mine?

Am I your hope or are you mine, lord?
Am I your dream or are you mine?
    Yes!!!

I have wished for a decade now this would be some sort of foundation for a full song. Beautiful stuff. The melody is incredible too.

Two Step 6.7.08 (Lt 13) has some great ones too

I remember when I was small and in the car,
coming in, my old man watching ball,
    and when the day gone,
thought that he was super hero, oh he was so,
and so it goes, he grew old,
face, shoulders, bent forward, bow down,
weight upon this, shoulders broke, too large,
for him to bare it anymore,
    he moved on --
    Mother, she cried, she cried,
and she learned to hide it down inside,
oh baby, oh babies, oh babies,
    oh, he won't be there

It’s one of my favorite tapes. It seems like all of those ‘04 tapes were just a little bit better for whatever reason. But yeah, that version of CE was great. Almost sounds like a LWS song.

Possible for someone to seed this show? Doesn't look like there are any seeders in the Torrent forum.

12/8/1998 #41 Outro is one of my favorite improved lyrics

maybe I will wait for you here
    maybe I will hold you
    maybe I will wait
    maybe I will go in
maybe I will wait for you
and baby I will go there too
and maybe I will hold you up when you're down
and maybe I will run like a scared, scared child away
and maybe I will reach up
and maybe I will pray for you not to go
    maybe I will
    and maybe I won't
    but you don't know
    you don't know
    you don't know
    you don't know, oh

In that show as well the outro to Last Stop includes the line:
"no need to worry yourself a while
the world will do without you for a night "

    and I absolutely love that.

I always thought the '04 tapes sounded a little better than other years too. I think it's just because the band was so tight and in sync that whole year.

And yeah this Crazy Easy is one of the best. Love the extended outro lyrics and how it slowly fades away compared to how it normally ends.

Dave’s throwaway lyrics of the early 2000’s are better than anything we’ve gotten in the last decade

Sad but true for the most part. I wish he could still improv lyrics like he used to. He struggles to improv even just a few lines of lyrics during the Two Step intro nowadays. The LT36 Two Step intro is embarrassing...

I miss Dave improving in general. Especially the Two Step intro. It was a strength of his that has now become a weakness. He doesn't do it at all anymore!

    I’m drowning now
God it seems, has left me behind...
But then again, I do not worry
I could just make up a new god
And have some funky tea party of my own

LOVE THIS. Best improv ever, made Drive In Drive Out one of my favorites. I have a dumb question- which performance is this?? It was on Spotify when they used to have those live compilations of all the DMB albums- I loved that shit and I was so pissed when it got taken down. Would love to know which concert that was, and same for The Last Stop and Halloween- I just can’t seem to find exactly the same version... idk what my malfunction is lol.
