Recently Sister hasn't shown up very much. Has only really gotten 5-6 plays the last couple of years, which really isn't a lot throughout 2 tours.

I love Sister. Don’t understand the hate it gets. It’s not like it murdered Baby Blue like what Everyday did to #36.

I don't dislike it either. It's a beautiful song. But play ANY Song in the E1 spot as many plays as it's gotten over the years, and I'm gonna give it an eye roll.

It just feels like their are songs that COULD be played in it's place and that's more or less his "I don't know what I'm going to play in E1 tonight" Default song.

Just looked through DMBAlmanac and yes it's really actually not all that much anymore. Good call out.

It's wild how we ASSUME it still is though because it did get overplayed for a good while. I felt this way about DDTW, OSW and Everyday openers. They feel like the ones that happened 7/10 times, but if you look at data on dmbalmanac it's nowhere near that.

Yeah Sister isn't that big of a boogeyman anymore. While it was in the past, my point with '21 SFTW is how badly it was abused in the slot right off the bat. Even in Sister's most played years it didn't get abused to the tune of 7 out of the first 10 shows. I don't buy that the band needs to "warm up" to a tour to begin with but even if so warming up does not include being so ill inspired to pick the same song in the same spot that many times in a row that is just fucking lazy.

prob an unpopular opinion but i prefer Everyday to #36. The verses on #36 are nothing write home about, mostly improv and sometimes discombobulated about people standing in the corner by themselves.

I think they managed to make #36 a better fun-loving structured song in Everyday. You get a much more engaging back and forth among the crowd and the band with Everyday singing the chorus of #36 (which clearly is the best part of the song anyway.)

Probably >100 songs I'd like to see E1 in various formats but even from recent history I'd be excited about a solo Baby Blue and Shotgun

1000% agree with this. everyday is a fantastic song live and I'd happily take it at every show.

I enjoy them both. I wouldn't want a true #36 in a set, but I appreciate them both for what they are in the times they were played.

In the 90's it was a band looking to eat up some set time with jamming. It was fun early DMB. A less structured fun song that could go on too long. The scatting is fun for like one verse, but multiple verses got tedious.

I too like Everyday more, and always appreciate a finished song over something that's not quite there. I also like the various iterations that Everyday itself has been through since 2001. The lovely ladies versions. Dave solo versions. The versions with Buddy. The versions with Vusi. It's a new classic DMB song. And tagging in the "honey honey" line at the end has always been the chef's kiss.

There was a while where it was getting stale, as it opened up too many shows. I like it more lately when it's midset somewhere. It's a nice "pick me up" after a heavy song.

I always thought a good solution to the Everyday/#36 problem was to have maybe the back half of #36 at the end of Everyday. You would only get a couple scatting spots, a lot of the chorus, and a good sax jam.

I miss the idea of it, but not the execution. If they took a different approach to it for another round, I'd be up for it.

First set should be mostly classics. More D&T. More variety of band members. Change up the songs a bit more. They often sounded so similar minus the horns changing up some fills now and then. One night do Bartender D&T and then another night do it full band acoustic.. Dave solo You Never know and then full band another night.. Just more variety over all. Getting songs like Sweet, Take Me To Tomorrow and Sugar Man in the first sets was not what I had in mind with it.

The guests they brought out for it were fun. Maybe add Bela Fleck for a tour lol?

Re: Random dmb thoughts that don't need their own thread

Looking back on the 2-sets, we got a lot of gold there, but most people's shows were really front loaded with the gems because of the format. The electric sets would take a real nose dive toward the end, especially if you had the Lovely Ladies showing up that night. Yes, a lot of the acoustic sets felt limited, but in the 2 years I went (3 shows in 2014, 5 in 2015) I saw loads of stuff you rarely see in any given year and some of it more than once (some cooler than others, sure):

    Beach Ball x2
    Snow Outside x3
    Let You Down x2
    I'll Back You Up
    Good Good Time x2
    Captain
    Cry Freedom
    Spoon
    Raven
Slip Sliding Away (short lived cover, but I dug it)
    Belly Full
    Butterfly
    Stolen Away
    Say Goodbye
    Recently x3
    #27 x2
    Halloween x5
    Some Devil
    Oh x3
    Little Red Bird x3
    The Stone x3
    Typical Situation x3
    Minarets x3
    Old Dirt Hill
    Hunger
    I Did It
    Pig x2
    Big Eyed Fish
    Best of What's Around x2
    Two Step x3

Granted, maybe I pick my spots better, but I really appreciate what they were playing. From that era, Alpine 2015 is one of my favorite weekends i've ever been to and Dave playing the first Let You Down in 17 years at Deer Creek was one of the best moments I've ever seen.

Yeah as usual 2 sets complaints not rooted in reality.

Change up the lineup more? As opposed to the standard full electric set where we get the same full lineup for a show and then a Dave solo E1 every night? People act like 2 sets was a step back because they didn't innovate better on the innovations but the innovations were still novel ideas from what they do in a standard set. Have yet to see criticisms of 2 sets that actually makes sense compared to the normal set format as opposed to comparing it to some hypothetical "better 2 sets" that we would only get if they went back to it and kept improving on it, but yet when people say do you want 2 sets back? They say "no". Makes no sense.

It was easier to get great encores in 2015 because encores were much much better. The E1 Dave solo abuse and terrible encores really took off in 2021. It was a time before Halloween and Last Stop were relegated to a single night/final night of the tour and there was actually tons of great full band E1s in 2015 too. 2022 is the best encores of the last 3 years, at least consistency wise, simply because they freed Two Step.

re: Lovely ladies I think that people often confuse their disdain with 2015/2 sets because the LL were around too. Like yes that happened to be a tour they were around a lot but it didn't necessarily have anything to do with the format and they have been MIA for years.

    First 10 encores of 2015:
    Granny>Rapunzel
    Best of What's Around>Grey Street
    Sister>Ants Marching>Halloween
    All Along the Watchtower
    Sister>Grey Street
    Granny>What Would You Say
    Ants Marching>Halloween
    Sister>Two Step
    Sister>Ants Marching
Best of What's Around>All Along the Watchtower

    First 10 encores of 2023:
Looking for a Vein>Don't Drink the Water
    Looking for a Vein>Ants Marching
    All You Wanted Was Tomorrow>Warehouse
    Looking for a Vein>Grey Street
    Looking for a Vein>You Never Know> Why I Am
Something to Tell My Baby>Ants Marching
Singing From the Windows>Break Free>Louisiana Bayou
    Looking for a Vein>Grey Street
    Looking for a Vein>Rapunzel
    Looking for a Vein>Grey Street

2015 - 5 solid and fan favorite full band E1s, Two Step and Halloween on the table within 1st 10 shows, Sister repeated 4 times but otherwise E1 looking fresh with a mix of full band and solo E1s

2023 - LFAV played 7 times... Dave already falling back on weaker E2s that are quick and easy songs to end on like Grey Street, Why I Am and Bayou to finish shows, Two Step and Halloween are not played until show #29 and #24 (and only because of a storm) respectively out of a 43 show tour...
