    Re: Stefan's Twitter

I think what you’re describing is the norm. Some people have a favorite band(s) that never change but have many that come and go out of your repertoire.

The way you’re wording it makes it sound like by a certain age people lock in a select number of artist they listen to and never deviate from that. That could be the case for some, but not most, and certainly not all others.

What you’re saying about being in love with the art of certain people is probably more common than you think. Yes, to some music is just noise to pass time to. But when you’re talking to people on a message board dedicated to a specific band, they’re probably going to have a more eclectic catalog of music than the masses.

I see. Agree with dmbongreyst, that's the norm. My favorite bands of all time are firmly in this order: 1. Metallica 2. DMB 3. Tool...then everyone else. I still listen to other bands and music all the time. One of my favorite features of Spotify is the Discover Weekly mix. I certainly would love to add names to that list but time will tell.

    Re: Stefan's Twitter

My favorites are between David Gray and DMB. Sometimes one floats to the top, sometimes the other. Unfortunately there's almost zero online presence of David Gray fans, and DMB are just a bigger act, so there's much more engagement with DMB. I think my major favorites have been consistent since I was a teenager. There's definitely overload these days with access to music that things get pretty muddied. The gems still shine through though.

Very polarizing list (which I like).

    1) Pink Floyd
    2) DMB

    3) Tool

    4) Everyone else.

Yeah, I think most people have bands that are go to favorites while also listening to many artists and types of music. DMB is the only band I put a lot of effort into following and seeing every year but I love all types of music and concerts.

But not more than the Beatles, Bob Marley, Stevie Wonder, Big Head Todd, Dream Theater, Yes, Zappa, or the Police.

They are merely another handful of my favorites...none really above others...they reside on the plateau of my favorite musics. Many genres, many artists, many records, many songs. Coltrane may be my favorite musician, but he's not who I listen to most, nowhere near in the last couple of decades. It's my hundreds of hours of listening to him play and improvise...looking at how he composes and arranges. I'm not sure any musician on any other instrument or in any other genre has ever been as good as Coltrane. The human is actually my "favorite" instrument...nothing is more nuanced or unique (yet oddly more limiting in most cases). So, given a choice (which I have all the time), I'm more likely to listen to a band with vocals. The Avetts became one of bands to join the fray about a decade ago, while Isbell got there within the last couple of years. I have no top five, 10, or whatever and if I complied one it would be of that day...that moment.

But it's one of many areas where I don't see eye to eye w/ a lot of DMB fans, especially on ants. Listening to music or seeing shows isn't a sport or a contest. I don't care about stats. Because of my listening habits and jumping around to different stuff all of the time, I can't/won't dedicate my time listening to many/most/every available live versions of DMB tunes to determine the "best". We do listen to live DMB, but the preference is that it's in that moment. There's a few official live releases (from RCA), live trax, and DMBlives that we spin, but it's mostly the studio albums for us. Same goes for most bands.

I'm fine with not being in the norm and wasn't saying having those few go to bands/artists isn't to larger norm, it just wasn't in my circles growing up and especially when I was studying music. It's actually my music appreciation that got in the way of playing, writing, and performing. There are many aspects of life where I gladly fall outside of norm, which is fine.

I'm just sharing my views and experience as an obsessive music fan. It seems like it might be bothering some folks. I was thinking it would be more of discussion, but I get it.

    Cheers all.

I don't think anyone particularly cares what music you like or in what amount. The comments were drawing attention to your lack of imagination that others could experience music differently than you.

    Sounds like Hannibal Lecter

You don't like Stand Up or Everyday, if you went to a handful of shows and saw nothing but songs from those albums would you care about the stats? It's that simple for a lot of people.

yes we are quite aware that you don't consider yourself similar to other fans. one could say it's what you consider to be your defining trait!

Stefan’s Twitter is a minefield, yes - but he co-wrote the Dreaming Tree and that is enough for me to always give him the benefit of the doubt.

    Classic first post

It is funny to me how many people (not ness here) missed that Stefan post about pos/neg was a joke about the test results.
I can see how it would be mistaken though since he was vocal about d&f being second tier so to speak

It's not the topic that's bothering folks, it's the fact you're coming off like a total pretentious snob in the way you describe your approach to music. Honestly, my approach is similar, but you won't see me describe it with an air of arrogance in every paragraph.
