Re: New Remasters

youre welcome Jamie! question for you and Xcacel--- ive never liked how dave's guitar sounds on the LWS. theres a heavy effect on it (chorus i think?) that just throws me off because it sounds so fake imo. is that something you guys would be able to dial back or even remove so the natural acoustic sound comes through?

Oh, I’ll leave the answer to Jamie, for some reasons

Good question! Audio can be manipulated to a certain extent, but usually not radically changing the sound of specific instruments within a two channel stereo file. Since everything is in a mix all together, if you start manipulating the sound somewhere along the audio spectrum - such as a guitar - it starts impacting every other sound that lives within the same frequency range and can compromise the integrity of the overall sound very quickly. So, while there's a lot that can be achieved in mastering, there are also a lot of limitations. In this case, nah, drastically changing the actual core sound of one particular instrument that's bundled in with all the other instruments is not really feasible.

    Hope that's a helpful answer!

ah too bad, that's what i figured but thanks for explaining it so clearly!

if i had one wish it would be for the band to let lillywhite take the LWS and finish mixing / mastering

Hey guys. Thanks again for all you do with these things. It’s brought many hours of bliss on the patio this summer listening to shows we’ve been lucky to attend and relive those moments. You guys rock! Figured I’d put this out in the universe and see what magic you guys can come up with. In honor of farm aid returning to the beautiful land of Deer Creek, wondering if you could drum up anything with DM’s performance that night. I know there was some level of live broadcast, not sure if fully and there are some videos on YouTube but not all and some have songs cut off. I remember sitting up on that lawn just 2 weeks after 9/11 and it was a cathartic moment with all the musicians and people being back together. The partial pig was definitely a vibe at that time with all the uncertainty going on in the world. The watchtower with a guest on harmonica was great. Looking at notes on almanac it was the first time crush played solo. First time several songs had been played solo in a really long time and pig has only been solo 2 times ever to this day

    Just a thought

Any possibility of getting LIOG with Trey guesting from Saratoga in 07? That has to be a top tier version of LIOG and the recording doesn’t do it justice.

I really wish this could get an official release at some point. The show was awesome.

Hey dude. I love that version, it is very up high on my favourite Graves list.
There are two sources for that show, the one from Izaak Micah is probably worth a try.
But there are some clear notes in the txt file:

    Quote:
    ************************************************** ****************
*** DO NOT USE CRAPPY QUALITY NO MP3 UNLESS FOR /YOUR/ IPOD ***
*** NO EDITING OR CHANGING OF THESE FILES FOR ANY REASON ***
*** NO MIXING IN ANY WAY IS PERMITTED WITH OUT THE ***
*** TAPER'S PERMISSION - NO SELLING OR EBAYING THIS RECORDING ***
    ************************************************** ****************
We don't rework anymore any file without taper's permission, and I have no idea on how to contact Izaak, he hasn't left any contact info. If any Ants knows how to reach him, we might ask permission.

Hey dude. Your "thought" is a nice one, indeed.
About that show (09.29.2001), I haven't been able to get a broadcast audio source, or a broadcast full video, apart from the two videos posted on Youtube, which have also been relased on a Farm Aid compilation.

I only got the Watchtower, so I played with it a bit, and also experimented a new tool that Jamie introduced to me when we were @Noblesville, but before the show (Sonnox Oxford Inflator... thanks Jamie! I finally made it work).

Bottom line: here is only one track:

Probably not that helpful and you’ve probably seen most of these but here’s what I’ve seen or have recently found for farm aid ‘01. I assume it wasn’t fully broadcast and the partial bartender and pig were probably rejoin from commercial. Big bummer. Thanks again for all you guys do!

Funny coincidence: Two days before this post I just gave all LIOG versions available to me in rotation.
Deliberately heard through speakers and headphones...there are damn fine versions. I think Liog has risen in my ranking :-)
Of course, the Derek version is good without exception, but some of it is definitely included with the image material.
This PURE devoted joy of the band members. A comment once said "this evening history was made". And regardless of the quality of the song, Dave and the others must have had similar thoughts....in the exercise of their talent combined with the quality of each and every member to deliver that tonight. The looks (from Rashawn towards the end -> pure gold :-)), the little gestures from Derek, the "this is where it ends" gesture from Dave, Carter's laughter when they just don't stop at the end and slowly carry the thing home. ...
    CRAZINESS.
    Goose flesh.

But others that I found particularly special:
    Polaris-6/19/2000
    Riverport 9/19/2000 (2000 was a good year :-)
    Weekend on the Rocks
    and especially
Live Trax 17 (double WOW, really, really excellent, I thought again, longer isn't always necessarily better, although I often feel that way, because good things can take a long time)

Just a few songs in, but this already sounds excellent! You took an already great quality audience recording and gave it just enough polishing to make it shine even more!

    Thanks,

I don't know if this is even possible, but I always wanted the AOL sessions (Dave Solo) in good quality. The YouTube vids are not great but this version of Crush is one of my all time favorites.

I think theres only about 7- 8 songs

    Here is Crush

Isn't that the truth!? I love so many things about this show....listening to Sugar Will right now, and Roi absolutely destroys the sax solo. I remember when the tape came out for this one, as well as 7/31/04. Listened to both shows repeatedly that summer....such quality tapes and high energy/great quality performances from the band! That whole 2004 tour had a distinct vibe to it....like you could put on a random show from that tour, not tell me what year it's from, and I feel like I could identify it as '04!

Wow! Best one you've done so far in my opinion. Impressive, clear, and beautiful work.

The quality was great and they did a great job with this remaster. The show however was kind of a bore for me with 04 standards. I love 04, but this was kind of like the LT 2004 Atlanta show that was not too great either. Crazy that 8/7/04 was 2 nights later and that might be one of my all time favorite shows.

    (mastered by djamieb)

    SETLIST

    Samples:
There's a sample of the outro jam to "Break Free" from the original broadcast and a sample of my mastered version in the "Samples" folder, just so you can hear the difference between the original and the mastered side by side. I’m really pleased with how this master turned out!

    Remastering Notes:
The Sirius stream was very nicely mixed and well balanced, so the mastering I did here was all about small moves to enhance what was already there. I love the improvement in this master - especially in the fullness of the low end frequencies and the stereo expansion from working in mid/side mode. I think everything feels crystal clear, yet warm and punchy; I’m very happy with how it all sounds! In the mastering process, I applied a bit of corrective dynamic EQ and resonance taming, very light glue compression, sweetening EQ, a bit of mild saturation, stereo spread enhancement, and the tiniest bit of gentle limiting (just enough to address any big transients that were poking through). Excited to hear your thoughts!

Note: I chose to share the Break Free outro jam as the sample simply because what Buddy played is absolutely incredible, and it's a highlight that I want to draw your attention to right away. I laughed out loud several times while working on this section of the show; can't believe how ridiculously good Buddy is and how lucky we are that he joined this band!

Sorry if this has been answered or if theres a place for me to check but are there any early (1992) shows that have gotten the Xcacell treatment?

That and 1-27-93 are both phenomenal and very different shows. If you like early days DMB, they are a treat.

1-27-93 is on DMBlive, but the tape is a SBD pull and sounds pretty much the same to my ears.
