I couldn't figure out what was bothering me about the studio version, so I tried playing along with it and that's when I realized what it was. It's just a smidge above standard tuning, not even a quarter tone, just barely enough to notice it. It sounds like when they'd speed up tunes on the radio ever so slightly so they could fit in more ads. I'm guessing the vast majority who are not obsessive weirdos probably don't notice and can enjoy the studio cut just fine.

Yeah I am too, it's becoming my favorite off the album. That jam is awful though, they should have let Jeff solo there. I could see this being one of the songs that disappears, for whatever reason. It would be a great summer single though and should be utilized more in power slots

The Only Thing is my favorite song off the album and probably my favorite song that they’ve put on any album since Big Whiskey era.

I only just found out that this song played in 2021 and 2022. Gave the debut a listen and quickly turned it off. Given the way people are around here, I bet there are actually people saying that "it was better" when it first debuted as an unfinished mess.

It's pretty darn good on the album. Well produced track. Quite anemic live by comparison.

I never listened to this song before the album, but went back and listened to copperpots version this weekend. While I think you are generally right, im kinda surprised because many times the debut version tends to be my favorite (b&bb, spaceman). It seems this song had alot of work done to it lyrically. I do wish the "lonely world your living in" was kept but there really isn't a way with the new version

This song reminds me of something they would’ve written on tour in the mid to late 00’s, but the chorus really takes me back to the 90’s for some reason. (Think Sweet Up and Down to Drive In, Drive Out with a tinge of She) It’s like the ultimate imitation of Dave’s old self mixed with a bit of new.


I personally believe it to be the best, most accessible, song on the record. And as far as lyrical content goes I’m not sure how he came to write a song that sounds like someone close to him or himself has dealt with the loss of love, isolation, regretting reflection time and major depression, but the doctor line is so simple yet so effective to explaining the modern world and its societal issues. The consensus seems to be it being cookie cutter but sometimes that’s just what the song is or needs to be to really speak out, and that, this song does.


Daves lyrics are so honest I confuse him with the voice in my head.

I agree on the initial live version not being up to par but the live version on the most recent warehouse disc is money. Turned into a beast imo

Oh it's so good. The Only Thing has been a subpar song until last year. That jam really helps and the energy and pacing just seems dialed in now.

Dave cannot come close to singing this song live. The studio cut isn’t bad but it’s atrocious live.
