That is weird... people really gave you a hard time about that?
I guess, maybe, there's a difference of perceived acceptability. In public, at a theatre, it's "sanctioned" by the Company showing you the movie. It's not a personal choice, everyone has to do it to see the image.
But if you do it at home, you're making a decision to do it of your own free will.
Or they were just jealous you had a 3-D television.
