Re: Black Panther (2018)

Saw it earlier today, and the hype isn't just hype. It's really great. Michael B. Jordan almost steals the show from Chadwick Boseman. But moreover--all of the women in this movie are just poetry in motion. Danai Gurira in particular.

As far as the action/entertainment value, that's solid too. Especially one chase scene early in the film, which was just an awesome ride.

this thing's gonna be huge (well some of the numbers are already in). The nearest theater to me I most often go to for anything, the first two screenings of the day tomorrow morning (as early as 10:30am and then 11) are already totally sold out, have been for hours.

and is 3D maybe really starting to finally die out? of all the theaters in a 10 mile radius from me (a dozen total), only 2 of them have any 3D screenings at all tomorrow, and in each case it's only one for the whole day.

Stinks that 3D seems to be fading out. I've always liked it. I even have a 3D TV (yeah, yeah). When a lot of movies were out in 3D, I liked watching at home. The weirdest thing to me was that people thought it was odd that I'd wear the glasses inside my house. Not sure how that makes sense but whatever.

In 30 years, I'll have an antique 3D TV that someone will pay money to have.

It's only because in theaters, people are asked to wear something to experience it. When the tech is made invisible with no inconvenience factor, and reasonably priced, they'll clamor for 3-D. Probably another decade away at least.

^Just weird that people are 100% okay wearing glasses inside a theater surrounded by a bunch of strangers. On the other hand, those same people thought it was weird that I'd wear the glasses in my home where I'm alone.

Just seemed counter-intuitive to me. Like, who cares if you're wearing 3D glasses inside your own house while watching a 3-D movie?

That is weird... people really gave you a hard time about that?

I guess, maybe, there's a difference of perceived acceptability. In public, at a theatre, it's "sanctioned" by the Company showing you the movie. It's not a personal choice, everyone has to do it to see the image.

But if you do it at home, you're making a decision to do it of your own free will.

Or they were just jealous you had a 3-D television.

yeah not to go all too side-topic-y here, but by the time we get to 30 years from now, I'm not entirely sure it won't be common that we have something more in the flavor of like hologram-based for viewing entertainment content in the home.

Yeah, it was just kind of weird. I would just sit there thinking that of all the things that I do at home, watching a movie with glasses is the least embarrassing.

Curious why you're glad it's going away. I thought there was always a 2D version, so if you don't like it, it doesn't affect you, right?

a lot of time the UltraScreen showing was in 3D and I like the UltraScreen, if 3D is segregated to a smaller screen who cares

Thought it was great. I agree with GoCubs that it’s one of the best origin stories since Iron Man.

On the 3D debate: Avatar is still the only movie I’ve seen that warranted it. Movies need to be shot in 3D to make it worthwhile.

i'd like to try to sneak away to see this, but i just don't know with my upcoming month or so. i'm already sacrificing so much sleep that the 3 hours i'd allocate to traveling for and watching this movie would be more beneficial in my bed. good to hear the praise, but one question. is this the standard marvel script, or are their unique aspects to this film?

on the 3d debate, i've never been a fan. we live in such a great era of splendid HD. I don't want to lose any of that for some of the objects to look more rounded or for a bug to almost hit me in the face.

was just at universal studios and i hate how the harry potter gringotts ride required glasses

daaaaaamn. $192M for the 3 day weekend, which is now the 5th best domestic opening weekend of all time. Estimated $218M for the 4 day holiday weekend, for largest Presidents Day opening and largest February opening of all time (which previously was Deadpool).
It's also the 2nd biggest opening weekend ever for an MCU movie, with only the original Avengers still being ahead in the top spot.

although I still say what I've thought for months, that Infinity War will come along and set the new opening weekend record for ANY movie all time.

We live in a world where Black Panther made more than the Justice League. A few years ago that would have been unthinkable.

    not really at all.

DC made a shitty set up movie for Justice League and the JL reviews were terrible.

Marvel continually makes great movies, and everything ties in. Hell, even Antman and Dr Strange were pretty damn good. So to think Black Panther wouldn't succeed is kinda crazy based on the reviews, and how well received the character was.

Certaintly did not mean for my post to come off as any sort of way besides to say its cool that Marvel’s once B/C characters are getting pushed and having great stories told. Marvel put in the work and it is paying off big time.

FYI that is completely how I read it (not Jakes way) the first time.

Let’s be real one of the DC ball washers claimed that Justice League had the potential to make more than Avatar.
