Re: 2017 Hurricane Season...

I have a flight to Houston tomorrow for a conference on Monday. Not entirely convinced they're going to cancel the conference but I feel like my flight is going to be canceled and I'll have no way of getting in if I even felt safe enough to try. Good good. Money down the drain.

Rain & wind really picked up tonight, after a relatively mild day (although there were tornadoes about 10 miles from where I am)

Been pouring rain all fucking day here. We're definitely going to have some flooding in Austin.

    Thankfully I don't live near a creek.

Unbelievable storming right now. The day was mild as I said before so I went and got more supplies.

This website gives a good explanation of what has happened and what could happen: https://spacecityweather.com/

I'm in an area of Houston that is one of the least likely to flood, and outside my subdivision, looks like the streets are mostly flooded. School cancelled for the week (as it was on Friday). So my daughter goes to school for 3 days, and then gets 6 days off.

You're remarkably calm when there is still like 15 more inches of rain expected.

There's nothing more we can do. We have enough water and food and toilet paper to survive until the water subsides (went to the store yesterday), we have multiple flashlights and chargers all charged up, we are ready to evacuate if we have to (unlikely for where I live though), and we have electricity - we're better off than so many others. It's been brutal though.

Worst part is that they’re not even half done yet. 2 more feet expected.

That photo from the nursing home is insane. Not posting it bc I don't want to see it again (even though the news keeps showing it over and over). Can't believe there's going to be another 25+ inches of rain before it's done.

Just heard from a coworker in Houston... his house is fine as of now but he says he can't go anywhere even if he wanted to (freeways all around him are flooded). I can't imagine that feeling of being trapped and not knowing if/when the water may rise where you are.

That's the worst. Can't believe the rain isn't even halfway over.

If you have Snapchat you can pull up the maps and go over to Houston and you'll see the best footage of all the flooding from actual people's stories.

Like Drop said, every freeway has at least some flooding on it. With 2 small children, and a sick wife (perfect timing), evacuation would be difficult, in the unlikely event I need to. My neighborhood is designed pretty well - even when some closer streets are flooding, we've been okay - although last night I saw the first build up of water on the street (plus very windy throwing it everywhere), but by this morning it was all gone - much less rain than expected. Just started raining again though. I feel like if I have to be evacuated, it's a sign that the entire city has been destroyed.

    That makes snese.

I've yet to see a good map of flooding so I'm kind of lost of where the actual flooding. I know some places are worse than others.

I live in the Northeast so I can't picture what extensive rain and flooding from a Hurricane is like. I decided to compare it to snow totals because NWS Boston tweeted out the ratio for rain to snow (10:1).

That means 20-30" of rain = ~17-30' of snow. If some places to get the predicted isolated 50" of rain that's ~42' of snow. I couldn't imagine having to deal with either of that. That's just a ridiculous amount of water.

Any Ants, or anybody for that matter, dealing with this, please stay safe!

I'm in the NE too... I know what it looks like around here with 10 inches of rain over a few days. Can't imagine 3-5 times that.

My hometown was hit by the deadliest flood in the state of Georgia in 1994 and seeing footage and hearing stories all growing up make me never want to experience a flood ever again. Saw one in 1998 that was destructive but it wasn't as big as 1994.

I saw a "blizzard" in Atlanta 4 years ago. I'll take blizzards over floods any day of the week.
