2017 Hurricane Season...

It's August. So it's that time. Weather models indicating some potential within the next two weeks. We're due for a big U.S. landfall, right?

Sure hope not. Last one that hit around me was Ike in 2008. August/September in Texas with no power is not fun haha

First legitimate threat to the United States is showing up on the models. High end tropical storm or low grade hurricane in Texas at the end of the week looking a lot more likely.

Flooding would be a huge concern.

From National Hurricane Center: Life-threatening flooding is expected across much of the Texas coast from heavy rainfall of 12 to 20 inches, with isolated amounts as high as 30 inches.

This is going to be a mess. First major hurricane to make landfall since 2005.

Looks like this is going to cancel my FF draft.

In all seriousness, stocking up on water and food tonight, and gasing up all the cars.

You know who really wins with these hurricanes? HEB (our local grocer down in Texas). They have been sold out of water for a day (I have 3 packs of 24 in storage, and a bunch in the fridge, so we are okay there), and 99% of their bread. Busiest I have ever seen a grocery store. Hoping its just a shitload of rain, and the winds are relatively light, like the forecast suggests. Hope we are all safe, the FF goes on and I don't miss GoT.

That happens here in Arkansas when it sleets, or if we get an inch of snow. People act like a hurricane is about to destroy our state and empty the stores of milk, eggs and bread

I don't think wind will be a huge issue with this storm even if it intensifies dramatically. Someone in Texas is probably going to get 30+ inches of rain.

Now a Category 3 hurricane. Major hurricane. 5 feet of rain projected for some areas.

My family is all geared up - water, food, toilet paper. I live in the NW portion of Houston in a newer neighborhood, so I'll probably be less affected than other parts, but I could lose electricity for a while, like Ike.

Hoping the wind is reasonable and we still have electricity. We can ride out the flooding, at least where I am.

Read that it’s going to make landfall as a Category 4, loop around back into the gulf, strengthen again, and make landfall again. 5 day event for southeastern Texas.

    Re: 2017 Hurricane Season...

Allison went to the HEB (grocery) by our house for our normal Friday shopping for the weekend and said she couldn't even find a parking spot. Had to sit for 15 minutes waiting for one, and this is a HUGE parking lot that usually has probably 100 open spots. The only times I ever see it totally full with people waiting is the day before Thanksgiving and the day before Xmas Eve.

Inside there was no water. Not even sparkling (which was on our list.) No bread. Lines backing up into the aisles.

Why she waited is beyond me. I would have bolted the second I saw the parking lot.

I don't understand why people in Austin are panicking. It's just going to rain a lot here. There might be some flooding, but not in my hood.

I am in HW Harris County, so our area will not quite get it as bad as most of Houston, although the impact could still be devastating. In saying that, hardly any winds, and no rain right now.

Hunkered down with the wife and pets hoping for no flooding. Stocked up on water and such. Don't think it'll get too bad here but having been in a flood we are paranoid.

    Everyone stay safe!
