The Young Pope - new HBO series

Haven't seen any talk about this on here yet. First two episodes available to watch now. IMO, very intriguing start.

Honestly, the trailers that were forced on me, before West World comes on, didn't look very good. I will wait to get more reviews before I feel the need to check this show out.

plot: he does stuff the real life pope would never do. how subversive. due out next season: young Dalai Lama- he wears a flat brimmed hat and a Charlotte Bobcats alternate jersey and in the trailer he says something like: while the people meditate, we take over the world

First 2 episodes were better than I thought they would be. The show is weird and has a good soundtrack. Definitely had some red flags though. The tourists line was pretty bad, Pele nun and Sister Mary's conspicuous spying were also kinda cheesy. I couldn't stop staring at the one guys mole, the one scene it totally looked like he fell asleep on a coffee bean.

Anybody else finish this? Thought it was incredible - the music, the acting, the cinematography. Started off a little slow but certainly found its footing.

Felt like watching a television series by Wes Anderson.

I finished it and thought it was the best series in the past 5 years. I was blown away.

Episode 9 was an amazing peice of television.

Is this show just anti-Catholic propaganda? I'm a Catholic and the trailers I've seen for this show have given me that impression.

Not at all, and I am Catholic as well. In fact, watching it inspired me to go back to church after having not been for a few months.

show was slow at times but it wrapped up nicely

the final homily was incredibly powerful

yep gets way better

in fact, the first 2 eps are kinda boring but the way it builds and wraps up is worth the payoff IMO

Don't get me wrong, the show has its fair share of nudity, sex and suggestive elements in true HBO fashion. But I by no means thinks this detracts from the show, and I would say the overall message is far from anti-Catholic.

I finally got around to watching and finishing this show. In general, I thought it was incredible. I didn't love the way the show, at times, seemed to present the Church as being consumed by corruption and lack of principle, but I loved the Pope Pius XIII character (I would also love to have a Pope just like this). The acting, writing, music, cinematography - everything - was great.

This scene in particular struck an emotional chord with me. I love the way he wanders into the cabin of the airplane when everyone is asleep. This scene followed by the shot of him praying in the gas station parking lot was really beautiful and moving.

Edit: Following up on my first point, I think the corruption within the Church portrayed in the series demonstrates that the Pope/clergy is not the Church; God is. I'm not sure if this was intentional but that's one way of thinking about it.
