Yeah it goes into the regular old cable input on your tv, then you can do what you will with the sound. I did the above. I have cable now becuase my apartment complex pays for the basic service, so it's kind of worth it to just pay for the DVR and HD, compared to being a cable cutter with Netflix and Hulu. But for the year and a half prior to that I was a cutter.
