I would not say it is the majority at all.
For example, I played in a Dead cover band jam session over the weekend in NYC and everyone in that band can't stand John Mayer or Dead & Co. I was the minority that likes it.
Here are my thoughts on the two of them: As I stated earlier, I think their approach to guitar is different. Both styles are excellent and fit in with the Dead's music in their own way. So it comes down to chemistry and interaction on stage.
I felt like Trey was living out a Grateful Dead fan's dream during those shows. He came off as a little timid to me and as a result was always making sure to not step on the toes of the original members. I thought his playing was great at times, and a little too cautious at other times. He had a huge smile on his face and that was awesome, but I feel like they never got to that next level. This may have had to do with the fact that they only played 5 shows together.
John Mayer brings a new approach to the music and with it a new energy that in my opinion was lacking in FTW. The energy and excitement for the music is probably the best quality that John Mayer brings to the fold. Trey grew up loving the Dead's music and playing it (probably since he could play guitar). John Mayer's enthusiasm for the Dead's music is similar to a kid on Christmas. It is still relatively new to him and he is loving every second of it. This has clearly translated to a new energy in the original 3 members that play in the Dead & Company. Seeing John's approach and excitement over the tunes is resulting in a pure music experience that I really appreciate. I also think that the Dead & Company are more willing to take some chances and chase the music more.
The best way to look at the two is that FTW was a project to honor the Grateful Dead's past. The Dead & Company are a band that is continuing the next era of the music.
Hope I was able to express that the way I intended haha.
