Thats what it seems like.

I just dont see a legit argument where NIN and DMB are remotely comparable when you take the whole picture and not single out one aspect.

Dave is essentially a younger acoustic-based Neil Young. If you dont think thats bigger than Reznor, youre just taking personal feelings about the music too far.

Preference, no. Opinion, yes. Thats why I said it would be a shame, IMO.

I enjoy DMB more than NIN, and I listen to DMB more than NIN, and I think that Trent Reznor has done more to push music to a new place and accomplished more with less paving of the way than DMB has. There is very little precedent for what Reznor has done in music, the path from PHM to Broken to Downward Spiral is pretty incredible from a creativity standpoint, and had no business being as popular as it was. Has kept pushing for new outlets and ways to release music/albums, continues to release relevant music and tour successfully, and more recently has stared to produce film scores that are musically very interesting and very well recieved.

DMB does what they do very very well, and they had others who helped pave those roads successfully i.e Grateful Dead with a non-mainstream touring model. If the criteria really are significance and influence, I think Trent Reznor stands above DMB when looked at in total.

I think some of the stuff you mentioned, like film scores, could help Reznor get in and not NIN. Kind of similar to Perry Farrell.

I guess we will just have to agree to disagree that NIN is more significant and influential than DMB. What well-known artists has NIN influenced? What makes them significant? More original I guess I would agree with, although DMB was pretty original as well.

Hof is a sham. Dmb deserves entry but you really have to campaign. And I don't think they care.

Aside from the really obvious ones like Marilyn Manson and Filter, I think that The Prodigy, Orgy, and Rammstein wouldnt have found the market they did without NIN opening that space up. I think White Zombies Astro Creep album was heavily influenced by Downward Spiral (hiring a NIN keyboard player is a great way of absorbing an influence). Even more impressive to me that the straight industrial clones, I think the influence Reznor had can be clearly heard in electronic music like Bassnectar, Skrillex, and Deadmaus. More the, bringing a dark heavy rock sound to electronic music, vs bringing synth drums and bass to rock. The "metalization" of techno. I think the NIN influence is heard in Stabbing Westward, the Naked and the Famous, Massive Attack, the XX, Dillinger Escape Plan... their influence didnt inspire imitation so much as make a different feel more accessible across many genres.

Also, the whole Korn, Distrubed, Linkin Park style of music owns a huge debt to NIN.

NIN has influenced David Bowie, Peter Gabriel, and Kanye West, to name just a few.

Bunch of musicians were talking Reznor up when he turned 50

Oh good. Maybe DMB gets inducted next year with Radiohead. I’ve always daydreamed Jonny Greenwood and/or Ed O’Brien would set in for a song.

didn't Bon Jovi come out in like '84??
If they are just getting in now, I don't see DMB getting in right away.
This has always been my grip about the RnR Hall anyway. IMO band that deserved to be in were not and ones that are questionable were.

Didn't Radiohead come out and say they didn't care if they got in and wouldn't go anyway? Not a whole lot of incentive for the Hall to pick them if that's the case.

Bon Jovi, The Cars, Dire Straits, The Moody Blues, and Nina Simone are the 2018 inductees into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
    • Shocked that Radiohead didn’t make it, no matter what they said. That’s probably the most critically acclaimed band of the last 40 years.
    • Slightly less shocked that RATM did not make it in.

    My predictions were:
    Radiohead
    RATM
    LL Cool J
    J Geils Band
    Moody Blues
    The Cars

Yikes, I only got 2 right. At least Rick Ocasek will get inducted in his hometown.

I think they'll make it eventually, but they haven't exactly been leading the pack as far as making music in a long time.

The question of influence is an interesting one, because DMB by and large doesn't necessarily influence people to go out and do something similar. I don't think that can even be done, they're such a unique musical conglomeration. They are more of an influence to individuals and concepts that get folded into other things, thus it's a subtler inspiration.

I saw Kamasi Washington a few years back and most of his stuff was very much in line with the tenor tradition, but he did a few things at the beginning and end of his show that were straight pulled from LeRoi. But Kamasi is a.) young and b.) not a rock act so how much pull that has with HOF voters is debatable.

Radiohead didn't get in because they've adopted a "Fuck the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame" attitude and scheduled a concert in Argentina the day of the induction. If Green Day can get in on the first ballot, DMB definitely has a shot next year.

This pretty sums up why I think DMB will get in next year.

Radiohead basically came out and said fuck the hall of fame.... it's no shock they did not get in

Pretty much this. Probably haven't been relevant to the mainstream since 2008 when they were up for a few Grammy's.

Radiohead will go in probably the same year they have a couple headliners that they know will sell tickets without the risk of Radiohead not showing up.

The Sex Pistols told the hall to fuck off in a letter they sent to them, and the Sex Pistols still got inducted.

Radiohead or no, that's a pretty solid list of inductees. You could argue about The Cars I suppose, as their moment in the spotlight was somewhat brief, but overall a really good list. Hopefully they get some great performers to do a tribute to Nina Simone.

I still think DMB getting in is a fantasy, but ... *shrug*
Maybe as a first time ballot inductee, it might be a fantasy. But explain to me how The Car’s eventual induction was completely warranted versus why DMB will never be inducted.

Re: Will the Dave Matthews Band make the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame in 2018?

I feel like DMB has enough heavy accolades to get them. X number of albums to debut at number 1. one of the top grossing touring artists ever. they've definitely inspired plenty of modern, popular artists, etc.

In December, the 2018 picks will be revealed for the 2019 ceremony. This will be DMB's first eligible year. Do you think they will make it? Will the Boyd situation hurt their chances? If they do make it, will you attend the ceremony in New York?

Other artists who will be eligible for the first time:

    Beck
    Blink-182
    Bone Thugs-N-Harmony
    Counting Crows
    Dave Matthews Band
    Faith Hill
    Fugees
    Jeff Buckley
    Kenny Chesney
    KRS-One
    Outkast
    The Roots
    Shania Twain
    Sheryl Crow
    Snoop Dogg
    Usher
