Preference, no. Opinion, yes. Thats why I said it would be a shame, IMO.
I enjoy DMB more than NIN, and I listen to DMB more than NIN, and I think that Trent Reznor has done more to push music to a new place and accomplished more with less paving of the way than DMB has. There is very little precedent for what Reznor has done in music, the path from PHM to Broken to Downward Spiral is pretty incredible from a creativity standpoint, and had no business being as popular as it was. Has kept pushing for new outlets and ways to release music/albums, continues to release relevant music and tour successfully, and more recently has stared to produce film scores that are musically very interesting and very well recieved.
DMB does what they do very very well, and they had others who helped pave those roads successfully i.e Grateful Dead with a non-mainstream touring model. If the criteria really are significance and influence, I think Trent Reznor stands above DMB when looked at in total.
