I get that but it’s really not difficult, at least for me, to pretend like the mother never died. I have only watched the finale one more time following its actual airing, just to confirm how crappy it was. Besides the mother dying, they pretty much squeezed a whole season into one episode. I’m not sure what the goal of the last season was, but it was pretty terrible. Marshall’s story line is cringe worthy. I’m not sure if he was filming a movie and couldn’t be on set, but his interaction with the other main characters was limited to phone calls for like half the season. The comedy that drove the show was already fading in the last few seasons but towards the end it just seemed like they went over the top with everything. The last slap episode was pure garbage. The only time the show maintained is authenticity for me during the last season is when they went back and went through all the old characters and the How Your Mother Met Me episode.
Don’t get me wrong, there were some other decent episodes sprinkled in, but the last gold standard HIMYM episode for me was e20 from season 8 when Barney and Ted sing “For the Longest Time.”
It sucks that the show fell apart towards the end. For the first few seasons, I’ll even go so far as to say through the 6th season, the show did an excellent job balancing comedy with a continuing drama/romance based story line. Most sitcoms struggle with this. For instance, The Office, one of my favorite shows, is hilarious, but you can jump in at any time. The story line is contained to one episode.
