Re: COVID-19/new coronavirus thread

Been to several wet markets in Hubei and Wuhan and can confirm the absolute filth and nastiness. Their health and hygiene standards need to improve obviously. Both personally and commercially.

I think we can definitely criticize the health conditions of food markets, while also not being fucking racist. good health & sanitation practices should be done everywhere.

I hope he has the stomach flu for the next month and has to wipe his gaping, raw ass with all 1,000 rolls.

wasn't referring to this thread specifically, more so towards those who are trying to ignite xenophobia and racism about the origin of the virus.

He is a problem. If everyone would shop like a normal person no one would have a problem finding the essential things they need. The fact that this guy is selling it, makes it even worse.

Yeah it's awful. I've been seeing posts from people on facebook calling it the Chinese Virus. Might as well go all in and call it the racial slur name virus.

I wish this wasn't being left up to states, as far as shutdowns and shelter-in-place orders go. Seems drastic, but I find myself being confused about what I can and can't do outside of taking runs/walks or sitting in my apartment.

For example, eye doctor hasn't closed and I have an appointment. Need to get my prescription updated, been trying to sort it out for a month, so I'll probably go. Feel like I'm not supposed to, though.

Need to take my car in for service. Feel like I probably shouldn't.

Should we continue going to home showings? Who knows.

Can we get together with close friends who live in our building? It's less than 10, but feels wrong.

My point is, there's probably a lot of people in a similar position and no one really knows what they should or shouldn't be doing. Some places are closed. Some aren't. There's just a lot of obscurity.

i would say the rule of thumb is stay home unless it's an emergency. ie- my dentist is cancelling all appointments but will be available for any emergency procedures. those are the guidelines by CDC, ADA, and mass DPH

unfortunately, not everyone is going to be implementing this right away. but it's important to do your part and stay home as much as possible

I live on the Gulf Coast of Florida where it seems people have been slow to fall in line. Tons of people out and about, on the beach, restaurants, gym, voting... life goes on down here. But we've only had 2 *confirmed* cases in our county so people just don't seem too concerned about it... yet.

That said, I'm in the Air Force and we've been taking this seriously for weeks already. Not allowed to leave the "local area" (defined as between home and work), and we've split into two teams to keep operations going. I'm on the "work from home" team for the next 2 weeks, then we swap. Seems like the most logical way to keep flying and keep the country safe while still giving the virus its due.

As an American, extremely concerned about the economic toll this will take. My investments have taken a massive hit like everyone else, but feel fortunate to be young and have time and health on my side. Also there's probably no safer job right now than working for Uncle Sam (guaranteed paycheck, health care, etc). My heart goes out to everyone who is dealing with job uncertainty right now!! Keep your sense of humor and be kind to each other, and we'll all get through this together.

We just got an email to be sure to wash our hands and practice self-distancing and not to go into other departments unless necessary for business purposes...I have to run in and out of at least 3 different areas a day. The email ends reminding us to avoid congregating with 10 or more people AFTER work...as far as I can count there’s at least 20-30 people on the office area of our building, and more on our production floor. Sounds like more than 10 people to me. Guess we’re just going to wait until someone gets sick to start letting people work from home. It’s fucking ridiculous. That email was a fucking joke.

So dumb and doesn't really protect you, they should be doing things airing on the side of caution and taking more steps to ensure health not as few as they can get by with. I'm not sure if you saw my post in the other thread but nice job on the live stream!

I feel like there should be an honest conversation about China and sanitation and hygiene and food practices. China and Chinese people (mainlanders) lack basic standards we view as acceptable. That's not racist, it is just the truth. Basic hygiene, pollution, trash, food standards. It's disgusting really.

The country of origin of the virus needs to understand the cause of the virus, how humans became infected, and create reform to prevent this from happening again. Being extra cautious retroactively doesn't do too much good clearly. We know that cleanliness, hygiene, and eradication of pests are the best ways to keep people safe from transmittable diseases and illness. If basic standards aren't being met this is going to happen again and again.

    What Laura said.

Service the car? Nope. And I work at a dealership, in the service department.

Home showings? Nope. Do it in a month.

    Eye appointment? I'd cancel.

I agree, this shouldn't be left up to the states or the individuals.

If you want to have a get together with friends there's nothing stopping you, and there isn't anything the state can implement that would. But I'd still caution against it.

I'm just saying that until something is passed to force "non-essential" businesses to close, people that aren't in hot bed areas are going to continue to take calculated risks to do certain things.

It's easy to look at something like a car servicing and be like, "that's less interaction than a grocery store" and still do it.

And I need to see, so an eye appointment seems necessary.

The president should have honestly said, yesterday, that it's a 15-day shelter in place situation. There is too much ambiguity otherwise.

We’re grocery store only. Pediatrician called and told us they’re looking at delaying healthy baby appointments. Don’t like that at all.

We have an appt for our 15 month old tonight at 6pm. Glad we can get in, because we want to talk about getting tubes in his ears, as he has already had 3 ear infections, and he is regularly grabbing and holding his ears. Even if he isn't infected right now, it's clearly an issue.

No idea if he will be cleared to get that done though, if it was decided that it was medically pertinent.

We need to stop comparing our situation to that of Italy & China. It's completely different circumstances
