Re: the (2021) summer so far

It's hard to reconcile that the band is sounding fantastic this summer but song chasing rarities would've been it's worst in a long time

There's always songs that we would like to have played frequently but they are playing a lot of great songs consistently

Based on the sets we actually and the three other shows that we were planning on seeing way in the long long ago, we missed:

    - Hello again
    - You might die trying
    - Sweet up & down
    - Rooftop
    - the space between
    - sledgehammer
    - Samurai cop
    - Seven
    - You & me

Probably not worth all the related extra costs, but I was really hoping to get SUaD this summer...along w/ PM. Hope they pop up next year too.

10 points to whoever guesses the three tunes I'm glad to have missed...

Forget rarities, how about that set predictability. The band is about one step away from playing a canned set of the same radio songs in the same order every night a la any other boring classic rock bands. They will start booking po-dunk county fairs next year at this rate.

If I could get big three / tLWS for cheap at a county fair that'd be ideal, less traffic

Songs have been in predictable spots for years now. This is nothing new for this tour…

I got many of my favorite songs for the first time that I'd been chasing for years on this tour (You Never Know, Sweet Up and Down, JTR, What You Are, and more) I also got very cool spots (Seek Up opener) and features of songs (Warehouse stop-time intro + louie louie, Grey Street 3rd chorus) that I never thoguht I'd get to see. By far my favorite tour I've attended.

One more performance and Pig will have the most plays since 2010. Two more performances, the most plays since 2006.

These two observations have been made for probably all of the 18 or so years that I’ve been following the band, but I’ve actually been impressed with the variety this summer. Seems like there are less songs than ever they’ve fallen in love with and beaten into the ground and less cases of a bustout that only sticks around for 3 shows. Most set lists seem to be filled with a lot more songs that are on at least a 4-5 show gap than I can ever remember, rather than 85% of the show being songs they played 1-2 nights ago. And it feels like they’re tinkering with placement as much/more than they ever have.

The band has really never done better in this regard so I’m not sure what people are expecting this late in the game. Can’t Stop wouldn’t be my choice for 3rd most played song either, but most of the other songs on that list don’t bother me too much.

I can’t really ask for much more than what they’re giving us, especially when I honestly don’t think there’s been too many times when setlist unpredictability has been too much better. But it’s also possible that I’ve set the bar at an all time low, so idk.

Even if the band wanted to have a handful of staples that are played in common positions...change the staples. There is no reason with this band's back catalog and the amount of songs on the shelf or played minimally that are genuinely loved, that each tour couldn't have a 6 to 12 staples that get heavy play, and have it be different every year.

Can't Stop being played 18/30 shows (not including the fest shows) isn't great.

Pig getting more plays in a single tour than any year since 2006 is great. YNK getting its most plays since 2012 is also great.

Recently, Typical, and Captain getting just 1 play each is a cock tease.

Rhyme & Reason/JTR/Raven/So Right/Hello Again (2) and LLD/LIOG/Two Step/BEF (3) is maddening levels of underutilization of some of their best songs.

A big improvement over 2018/2019 summer tours, but the bar was SO low. I'd still probably take a majority of the Winter 2018 tour stops over the majority of the 2021 tour stops (so far).

Did a quick scroll through of encores this tour and imo they're all pretty boring. Burgettstown has the only exciting one to look at of IBYU + Warehouse

The Ohio B2B was actually pretty good, kinda reminds me of Mansfield/Hartford in 2018...underrated twofer.

I'd pay an extra $25 - 75 per ticket if it meant that I never have to hear bayou again, especially at B2B shows...that song is just trash.

Finished up my shows this summer. I really enjoyed this tour. I made it to Charlotte, Burgettstown, and Blossom. I loved Charlotte and Burgettstown. Blossom was good for sure, but I have had enough of the covers and the Jimi BS. They have a catalog of 200+ songs and to play 5 covers (although some semi) is just ludicrous. Covers really kill a show for me, just totally unnecessary. I am going to see Dave Matthews Band, not a cover band. That's my only gripe with this tour.

I think this year was the best the band has sounded in the past 10+ years

I realized I do not care about sets or song chasing when im at a show anymore, because even with a festival set like I got at Pilgrimage I still had fun.

I think I only cared about this band being not torture on the ears when being at a show like they had been for so long with how fast and loud and overbearing Tim got too.

Now they have toned back significantly, and you can hear each one of them- which leads me excited for the future in going to shows again.

I agree they sounded excellent. I also have gone back to just enjoying the show/moment. That's actually how I've always been with every band, but got caught up in watching and comparing setlists during the 2018 summer tour and found myself not enjoying the moment at our last show in VA Beach 2018. As a result I dropped that crappy activity. I did, however, fall a bit back into it in C-Ville in 2018 as they basically played the entire DC show from the previous night over the course of the two shows in C-Ville (11 on N1! and 7 on N2), except for YNK and Seven...both of which I'd rather have heard than bayou, DDtW, or ANY covers. Still N2 was excellent overall.

Similarly, I did NOT manage my expectations for MPP. I complained to my wife and here, but can look back and realize it was a very good show despite bayou and another AAtW closer.

And I've ranted on here about covers a lot over the last few years. I get that they can be fun for the band and a lot of folks seem to enjoy them, but I've no interest in hearing a single non-DMB tune at a DMB show...zero. It's cool for all the folks here that enjoy them, but no thank you.

what. They sound the worst they have ever sounded, and this is at the tail end of a 15+ year decline in sound.

this is straight up false. they sound way better now than they did in 2018-2019, and I think they sound better than they did in 2006-2009 as well.

FWIW, both of the Ohio shows were +6 for me on +/-

How they got to +6 was very different, but both about the same in terms of quality. The final run of songs at Cuyahoga was much stronger than the finish to Riverbend.

If you like out of tune violin, blaring electric guitar with horrible tone, inability to hear Dave's guitar, Dave blowing out his voice constantly, everything played as fast and hard as possible with no dynamics I can see why the current sound wouldn't be as good as years past
