Re: In need of some golf tips...

Played my favorite course today which was fun but that being said it's on the sides of mountains and has massive carries and elevation changes into greens, it's the most undulating course I've ever played by a ton and the 100 yard markers weren't there. Some of the 150 weren't. After the round "oh the club pro is out putting them in", nothing like hitting iron shots on perfect lines and being 20 yards short of the green.

Do you not have a rangefinder or a watch? You can also get distances on phone apps like 18 Birdies.

He’s a 3 or 4 handicap. 4 kids and runs his own business, so he only plays 9 per week.

One of his daughters was at the kids clinic. If he starts hitting balls a few times per week because she wants to go to the range, he will be a menace.

Got fit for a driver for the first time today. Used the same driver (Titleist 913D2) for four or five years now and become unhappy with the distance and far right miss (I primarily play a mid-to-high fade). Hit the newest drivers from Titleist, Ping, Callaway and Taylormade. Callaway felt the best on contact, Ping was going the straightest but the Titleist Tsi3 still went pretty straight (missed an average fairway only twice in 20 shots) and got 3-4 more mph of ball speed than the Ping, so that's what we went with. Super excited for it to come in.

I also got fit with a TSi, but I've got the i2 which I understand to be better for people looking for more forgiveness as opposed to ball-shaping ability.

Check out precision pro too. Free batteries are a big perk.

I literally cannot imagine playing golf and not having an idea of the distance to the pin, front of green, etc.

I'd highly recommend it myself. No issues with accuracy and they say you'll get 5,000 full charges out of the battery.

    Nice round TS.

Thanks Spell, made a few changes to my iron swing yesterday morning that worked out really well, trying to get back to the level I was at 10 days ago shooting +2 for 9

Amen to that. I would love to get back to where I was at the beginning of the year. Haven't gotten anywhere near 80 for a while.

Glad everyone got out and played well this weekend!

I Shot 101 on Sunday (LOL)

Played pretty terrible with my irons as usual but around the 13th hole or so my husband told me to get closer the ball and more over it. Once I did that it made a huge difference! It was actually going in the direction i wanted to and far haha. I kind of knew that's how you're supposed to stand but i always end up going further and further away over time. It just feels unnatural to swing while that close after playing softball but man does it help!

Itching to get back out and try again now!

Likely only a matter of time, especially if you know what it is that's holding you back and how to correct it!

Played this weekend. Shot 79-74. Couldn't putt for shit on Saturday. Short game was just awful. Then Sunday had my first time ever making 3 birdies in a row on holes 8-9-10 which was a lot of fun, also birdied 18 which is always a great way to walk off the course. Lipped out 5 other birdie putts. Getting that handicap down a bit (at 3.7 now). Gotta keep grinding. One of these days I'll break par on 18.

I tell ya it's been a LOT of work. I played on the golf team in high school, was captain my sophomore and senior years, maybe could have played D3 if I really worked at it but I was lazy, then sort of dropped the game a bit in college as I was too busy being a dumb douchey college kid chasing women and drinking and only played 10-15 times every year, and then really started picking the game back up post college and have gradually refound my love for it as I've gotten older.

I started trying to improve maybe 5-6 years ago and really started taking it seriously the last 2-3. I've gone from a routine upper 80s-lower 90s player to now a mid-upper 70s player since college. That only came with lots of lessons, countless hours at the range and short game areas and nonstop putting practice. Knocking these last few digits off my handicap has been by far the hardest part. Going from a 12 to a 7 handicap wasn't easy, but trying to go from a 4 to a 2 feels WAY harder.

I have two goals 1) break par on 18 from the tips at a legit course (I say that because there are some courses in the area that have some less than legit par 5s, 450 yards par 5 type holes that really are just kinda long par 4s and I don't want those to count) and 2) feel confident enough to play in a US Open qualifier. I haven't got there yet, but I'm grinding away. Got my handicap from a 4.7 at the start of the season to a 3.7 now. Feel much better about my swing today than I ever have. I absolutely should have broke par Sunday with how I was hitting the ball, but 2 bonehead mistakes and some tough breaks on putts kept that from happening. We'll get there though!

And that's my golf journey. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

    Thanks for sharing, dude

Golf is just such a fascinating game, so incredibly frustrating like 90% of the time but there are just some moments which cannot be replicated in any other aspect of life.

I'm hovering around a 12-14 depending on how many times I play per month and how I play, I just don't have the time to really get much better. I'm comfortable playing bogey golf for the most part, I know I have the athleticism and foundation to be better but the time investment is just not feasible for me unfortunately. My last two rounds have been 83 and 87, though, so I've been trending in the right direction as of late.

I'm scooting out at lunch to play a par-3 course up the road from me, haven't played there in a few years but just needed to scratch the itch on such a gorgeous day here in CT. Also heading out for a full 18 at 7:00 a.m. Sunday morning with a good buddy of mine, which will be a lot of fun.

Was supposed to be the buddies golf weekend upcoming, but #covid.

Making the best of it though with a round tomorrow at a very nice local course, and then on Saturday playing at a Top 40 ranked course in Canada for which I'm very excited.

Is everyone else getting out this weekend?

Do you guys set big rounds every couple of weeks as check points throughout the season that you practice for and look forward to or is everything generally the same week to week?

For me and my usual 4-some it's the same course every other Friday. We all went in on a bunch of pre-paid passes and are saving $20/round each so it was a no-brainer really. The course is awesome, too!

Beyond that, I just play where it's cheap. Golf is remarkably expensive here. Unless you're walking a twilight round you're not finding anything sub $50.

The same week to week. Golf is just a hobby that I try to not take too seriously. I try to play some more expensive/exclusive courses a few times a year as a treat, but I'm just as happy playing my local muni which I hit like 20 times a year.

The treat rounds are not really checkpoints so much as they are for special occasions like a birthday, Father's Day, long holiday weekend, etc. Usually I just end up going to a different public course within like a 30 minute drive

I have my 36 hole outing tomorrow and my regular game on Sunday (weather permitting). I don't have any big rounds or anything competitive, but if I were a member somewhere I probably would.

I do. Have 3 trips a year where I want to be playing well. Gambling typically ramps up and I play my best.

There are some Sunday mornings where I just don’t give a shit after a few bogeys.
