the music/time signature is what makes this song so good and fun. daves vocals are the sprinkles on top of the sundae.

I think you’ve got two crowds - the crowd that doesn’t know the difference between a 4/4 and a 7/8, and the crowd that understands measures, time sigs, general music theory/structure etc.

The two groups might judge music differently because of their understanding of music.

As an example, Rush is a band that gets crapped on by the general pop pretty often, but as someone who has played drums for 25 years, I consider Rush one of the most interesting bands to listen to. I don’t know if the songs are good or not, I just really like them because it’s fun to follow along and take in what they are doing.

Maybe that’s how I view Seven, I guess.
For the record, I've played guitar for over 20 years and have (what I would like to think) a very solid understanding of music theory.

It's still a bad song. Complexity does not inherently make it a good song. Funky time signatures don't inherently make it a good song. I can appreciate the musicianship displayed and still think it makes a hodgepodge of nonsense that doesn't equate to a good song.

I don’t think I made the claim that complex = good. I believe I said complex = interesting, and maybe that’s why I listen to certain songs that aren’t necessarily good but I enjoy them because they offer something else.

For the record, I think drummers (and bassists) are more interested by funky time signatures than guitarists.

When I play You Never Know on guitar, I could give a F about the time sig - it isn’t interesting. But on the drums, it’s a blast. Just my 2 cents

Seven is great. Never understood the hate for Big Whiskey. It was a massive improvement from Everyday and Stand Up.

I really like the subtlety of the keyboard/piano on the studio version. I think it's Rob cavallo, does anyone know for sure? Also, rois playing is funky asf, and Carter is super impressive as per usual

According to the Wikipedia credits, there were at least 3 different keys/piano players-

Rob Cavallo - occasional organ and piano
Roger Joseph Manning Jr. - keyboards
    Jamie Muhoberac - keyboards, organ

Doesn't specify who plays on what though.

Agree to an extent. Definitely a step up from the previous two albums and I frequently listen to it. However, I can see the hate for it as SMLAM/FTWII/You & Me are some of the more rough songs in the catalogue. Most won’t agree fully but I think we might agree that those three get overplayed and that leads to exhaustion for fans, at least on this board.

Ironically those three are my most heard songs. So maybe I’m biased and angry. Ha.

To me every single version sounds the same. Other than adding a few bars to the Tim solo, I wouldn’t be able to tell a 2009 version from a 2019 version.

Seven is like Bayou in the sense the lyrics get mad annoying. The song would benefit by being a condensed 2 minute instrumental live
