What a dumb, pointless opinion. Performers, by definition, want/ask for attention. Covering another artist's album requires that they make it their own, experiment (i.e., definition of avant garde), otherwise it's karaoke. If you don't like it that's fine.

Ryley wrote this for Vulture. Wonderful read and the deepest take he’s given on why he took on the project. We even got a shoutout.

Thanks Ryley. Many of us appreciate this album.

Lol to be honest, I really don't like covers that try to completely flip the song into something different. Especially if it's a song/album that I've listened to countless times and love; tLWS might be my favorite DMB album. I find it more impressive when someone just does a really solid cover of something and maybe adds something to it that the original didn't have.

If I hear the cover first though before hearing the original, then that definitely changes things. I might fall in love with the cover first.

Man, I am *completely* on the other side of this opinion. The least interesting track on this album, for me, is Grace Is Gone because it's pretty much a straight remake. The point of a cover, to me, is to explore those alternate universes where a song took on a very different form.

Great review. And I'm honestly shocked to hear such a genuine tone of respect for the source material. Pitchfork is the self-appointed intelligentsia of the music world, so I would expect every staff writer to be a member of the "Dave-agnostic circles" he describes, not someone who seems to observe those people from a distance (with an air of mocking, no less).

pretty awesome album. Was totally surprised by how different the songs sound. And I think this cements the fact that although I love the rest of the band, Dave's lyrics are the primary reason i like the band so much.

Great review from Pitchfork and sums up my feelings nicely. I will say, though, I could not get through the second half of JTR and pretty much all of Monkey Man. I appreciate the effort to not make a carbon copy of them, but these interpretations just didn't do it for me. Other than that, this record as a whole is a job very well done. I won't hold my breath but I'd love to hear a couple of these when I catch his show in Grand Rapids, next week.

"What is “Bartender” but a heady Swans ripper? And what are “Grey Street” and “Raven” but Gastr del Sol remade to fill an amphitheater? Or what is “Kit Kat Jam” but the amphitheater Jim O’Rourke? The main riff on “JTR” isn’t so far removed from Jack Rose or David Grubbs."

Translation: It's good because it kinda sounds like artists you've never heard of, that only an art student could pretend to like.

    I'm not addressing "taste."
I'm calling out outsized, insufferable, self-conscious pretension.

I actually like Walker's Lillywhite, overall. I'm just disgusted and exhausted by the relentlessly defensive, apologetic tone he and his crew has, when discussing an artist that eclipses him on every level and in every dimension. For Walker to constantly treat DMB as a "guilty pleasure" of "silly songs" is the height of delusion of grandeur for an artist as humble as he is. DMB are Olympian heroes, and as interesting as some of his interpretations are, Walker is a grubby mumblecore nonentity in comparison...yet he persists in damning his betters with faint praise and backhanded, desperately qualified compliments.

I really don't understand this take on DMB, or tLWS... at all.

If I had never paid attention to DMB, reading this I'd think they were some sort of fad like the swing bands from the '90s that faded as quickly as they appeared. And yes, there is a stigma about the drinking/smoking type fans... because they never outgrew the "frat house" start image.

My real gripe with his take is this: there was never a "leap" to take from tLWS to cool. The band was evolving (unfortunately, Dave's well being was also eroding) into something more than the charicature painted here, until management and production didn't see marketability. Ryley might as well have asked, "Where's the Tripping Billies?"

I think you have the wrong take on what he is saying.

We dmb fans can be overly sensitive to criticism and sometimes look for it when it’s not there. You can tell he is too, which is why he is bringing this album into the light saying look, with some different production these songs are what you hipsters listen to. You all like me and this band helped me define my sound.

Him sort of giving the music world a different perspective on what the Dave matthews band really is. They are not the radio frat band you think they are. These tunes are what the bands fans know they have in them. This is why they are loved. This is quality stuff. Listen again.

    At least that’s my take.

I really just... can't figure out how DMB ever became a "joke" to people.

    - They were never "cool" in the pretentious sense. More like music nerds, really.

    - They were never really "popular" in the dominating-the-Top-40-for-a-year sense, and what little of their material did live on the radio for a few months sounded nothing like anything else on the radio, really.

    - They're actually freaking skilled musicians, and they put on a great live show.

    - They're nothing but nice, and they've done a lot of good with their money, supported worthwhile causes, etc.

    - They only have two really negative marks on their record. One is the unfortunate incident caused by their bus driver--and that is STILL getting dragged out every time they appear in the media, as if it had been the band members' idea. It's the go-to baseball bat for pretentious critics to swing at them. The other is the recent stuff with Boyd: the only member of the band who has ever had any kind of negative allegations leveled against him. The only whiff of impropriety to ever come off the band.

Is there something else I'm missing, that explains why they end up the butt of so many jokes? Or is it just that human beings are a-holes for the most part, and it's all pettiness because they don't fit a mold?

Just going from my experiences and other's experience...

When DMB was popular in the late 90s with a lot of high school and college students it was EVERYWHERE on the campuses. And it was in your face. And the DMB fans were kind of obnoxious about it. Now, this isn't everyone's experience obviously and it's probably more concentrated on the East Coast/North East.

Maybe it's Dave's voice? Maybe the songs sound funny? I dunno. It's kind of like how in like 2005 everyone started to gang up on Coldplay. Some of the bullet points above about DMB could be applied to Coldplay yet they get made fun of.

DMB just gets it from both ways for being a stepping stone..

It's a step up from just pop/radio music, and some people hate on it for its exclusively and pretentiousness (i.e. If you don't know Lillywhite/Batson Sessions or if you don't follow sets, you're not a true fan)

On the other hand, (and for me), DMB was the entry way for almost all of my music tastes..they opened up worlds such as..Hendrix/Dylan/Young/Simon, Dead/Phish/Haynes/Krasno..but it seems like a lot of folks in these camps tend to look down upon DMB as lesser than.

Too quirky to be mainstream. Too popular to be alternative. It's a strange curse. DMB is damn good and disappointing all at the same time

That is a pretty perfect summary. And the other poster who mentioned their ubiquitous presence on campuses in the 90's... that computes, too.

It's funny. I came from a boring town in Indiana, and discovered DMB after hearing WWYS on the radio, right at an age where I was defining myself and discovering my tastes in music. It was like love at first listen, and I remember being excited in the following couple years as they began to gain traction. When I finally got to a college campus, and heard a car driving down the strip blasting BTCS, it felt electrifying and validating.

But yeah... I can see how it got picked up by the wrong sort of people, turned into a fad, wore itself out with some folks.

DMB was always predictably reviled by the strand of tone-deaf music tastemakers who fetishize the Velvet Underground and it's ilk--"music" that sounds so caustic and amateurish, it must be art!
DMB's sound was always clean, polished, technically accomplished and (worst of all to the art-rock cognoscenti) it had a swelling wholesomeness to it. It explores joy with abandon.
This is an unforgivable no-no to those that privilege all things grimy, gritty, and bleak. (Even though DMB always went there too, the light side was just too unforgivable by the lo-fi contingent.) These people see muscular instrumental virtuosity in a group like DMB as some sort of "compensation" for a lack of artistic "integrity."
Way I see it, it's always been the banal bitterness of those lacking the capacity for genuine joy.

What a great way to put it..the brightness DMB puts out overshadows all their melancholy gems. It's "Aw shucks", on the surface and darkness underneath. If you explore it all, the catalog will take you in every direction. If you only look at face value, well..love, love, you you you, baby!

I liked Busted Stuff, Grace is Gone, Raven, Big Eyed Fish, and Bartender. The rest was ok, maybe liked parts of but not the songs as a whole. For the most part, it was a decent attempt to try to put some kind of indie/jazz spin on LWS songs.
