Only 1 album in 9 years

Come Tomorrow is the album name. Is this the album that defines a third of the band's existence? It's very strange that they've only been able to pull together one hodge podge album since 2012..

I enjoy CT. It's not phenomenal, but it has received more repeated listens than I initially assumed it would. It has a good rock sound to it and I guess I compare it most to Everyday because of that glossy tight rock sound on it.

You would think in 9 years that even if Dave only wrote 5-7 songs a year, that would be somewhere between 45-63 new ideas to work on.. And yet CT has multiple tracks from previous sessions.

I find it hard to believe that Dave writes less than that... He's only really on the road 4-5 months a year and he seemingly loves to write songs. So where are they? Does he have a notebook or treasure trove of unfinished material in the studios and his house?

Re: Only 1 album in 9 years

I honestly think there really isn't any urgency to release new music since they know they'll be able to tour the rest of their lives solely on their back catalog and since no one in the band gives a fuck about cultural relevancy. I think they're more focused on spending time with their families now than releasing new music that they know won't bring in any new fans and will probably be blasted by their hardcore fans. The last time it felt like they were really inspired to make and promote new music was 2009 because the were galvanized by Roi's death. AFTW was nothing but fan service pandering for people who had been begging for a Lillywhite reunion. I have no idea what the fuck Come Tomorrow was but I don't think many people are going to argue that was a really inspired effort. Big Whiskey was the last time if felt like the band was really stoked about a new record and dedicated to helping RCA promote it.

I don’t really care for a new album either. It’ll most likely be lack luster and it’ll make sets even worse than they are.

Same. Would rather them focus on live shows and adjust their sets to please more before its too late.

I care about album quality more than release frequency, although I don't think the quality of CT justified a six-year wait

Pretty interesting responses! Wow. The band apparently knows their fan base in this regard. We'd rather see a set of the BIG 3 and LWS songs for the rest of this bands existence and couple 2004/2006 rarities thrown in...

I'd like some new material. Whatever this upcoming album is and then the Live not Live album they've referred to, and maybe one more final swan song... That's 3 albums. 2 of which brand new material, so 20-24 songs... And one that's 10 songs we know and love and just don't have studio versions of yet. I'd be satisfied with that.

I think Dave is honestly in top shape vocally and musically. I hope he makes the most of it before he gets too old. Everyone crosses that line sometime. Neil Young reinvented himself in his late 40's and 50's. But by 60, I'd say he was starting to lose his strengths even though he kept making a lot of new music...

Time between albums is a moot point.

Just release good music. Since 2009, that hasn’t happened much.

Different perspective, but with a new album very likely to appear in 2021, I would call it 3 albums in 10 years, which is pretty good considering the stage of the band's career and the fact that they continue to make good new music after all these years. Much different way of looking at it versus 1 in 9.

Posted this in the album thread, but I think it's relevant here too:

I like new music. It's weird so little has been released in a decade, even for a band of DMB's stature/age. I also want to see a really good album out of an older, different version of DMB. Come Tomorrow was not that album.

The band is very different now, I'd imagine there's a motivation to release a piece of work that represents who they are now. I want to hear that. I've long since moved on from recreating the exact feeling I had as I got into the band and discovered their music. But, I do think with me a lot older and them older there is a different version of excitement and elation that can be stoked by putting out some really quality work as an older band.

Looking forward to seeing if that can happen.

The only other band to compare it to is Pearl Jam. They are also hesitant to release a lot of new material. I'm not a huge fan but still like them and think they write some good tunes. They're last album was pretty cool but didn't really sound like Pearl Jam at all other than Eddies voice. I think that's where we're headed with DMB. Though I don't think they'll ever write a "Dance of the Clairvoyants"... That was such a strange and interesting turn for PJ.

I think Dave has been attempting to explore new sounds for 15 years to be honest. I mean Stand UP was that and so was Everyday... With songs like Virginia in the rain, Again and Again, Samurai Cop... That's all the NEW Dave sound to me.. But it's not really the DMB sound. It's kind of radio head meets U2...

Stand up came right after Dave did his solo album so I can see why it was him wanting to explore new sounds.

I doubt this is really that unique. I don’t have the stats, but I’m assuming most bands that stay relevant (and together) for multiple decades create a lot more music at the beginning than they do the rest of their careers.

It's a short list — Fiona Apple, Bowie, McCartney, Nick Cave, Swans, Tom Waits, Prince

These folks are exceptions to the rule, I think

This. Dave has nothing left to say. So... just don't. Come Tomorrow is absolutely dreadful.

Just be a touring band. More garbage albums will just pollute the tours since they insist on playing 4-7 new songs a night.
