Can you identify a live release song just by listening?

A little while back I was listening to a DMB playlist and Two Step came on, and a buddy of mine asked which version it was and I was like "Live Trax 13, St. Louis". He asked how I remembered that

Certain releases I can listen to and identify from the intro, or the jam, etc.

Mostly, yes. I don't know probably half the LT's but there's probably 30 tapes I could ID.

That's a very specific two step though. The only released one with those improv lyrics.

as long as it is a show i'm familiar with, yes, more than likely i can name it. i've called out the CP dancing nancies to a friend who was quizzing me just based on the crowd noise before the song starts

Yeah, for the most part. The more LT they release, the harder it gets. But for anything that came out from 1999-2010ish, my accuracy would be quite good.

I can do this with a select few songs

It's fun asking a friend to skip through songs to test you on the first few seconds.... think I have a warped sense of entertainment though haha

Re: Can you identify a live release song just by listening?

It gets a little weird the amount of tunes I can identify their date, year or release. A lot of it comes from listening to Carter's drums. As a drummer I've studied Carter for years and I can generally tell at least the year given his drum sound. Which of course starts to help narrow things down. For instance Carter's drums had a rather distinct sound in 04, mainly in his snare. So if I'm listening to what's clearly an official release and I hear that distinct sound from 04 I can narrow it down to LT 2 or LT 8 OR a warehouse disc.

so easily. i can do pretty much any song within five seconds of when carder comes in. the drums in the mix are always the give away

Re: Can you identify a live release song just by listening?

I do this with Seek Up 7-30-01 from SPAC. Unmistakable, awesome intro. Every instrument is represented so beautifully. Even the crowd noise is mixed well. I could name a few others, but frankly I've overcome the obsession of listening to multiple multiple versions of the same song. Content is so saturated....makes me glad Ants are focusing on bubbling the incredible versions to the top. Digging gold just takes too much time.

For the unique versions, yes. For some songs that don't vary much, it's a bit harder.

The distinct audio mixes on various releases is often a giveaway to which show/version it is.

Most of the time, yes. But if a live version of Crash comes on, it's almost impossible unless it's LT 7.

    Answer: yes.

However, it all depends on what your catalog of live releases is. If it's on a Live Trax I don't own, then it's hard. Also, some songs can be amazing one version and be a train wreck on others. I know Wrigley YMDT from just crowd noise but may not know another...

For sure. As long as I've head it before. Real giveaways for me are Dave speak and crowd noise. I'll sing or say certain yells

It's funny that you ask because this is a game I play with myself whenever a DMB song comes on Jam On (Sirius Channel). I am definitely not that familiar with the Live Trax(es) but I am usually able to identify the Live releases.

The funny thing is sometimes I can tell by what the audience shouts or some weird noise someone makes.

I'd say 75% of the time. There's just too many releases of some songs. And since 2012 or so, the overall band sound hasn't changed all that much. I can distinguish the 90-s-2007 pretty well just by listening and the mixes.
