Supposedly if you're vaccinated against smallpox already, you're well protected against monkeypox.

Wait, I read the smallpox vaccine is 85% effective against monkeypox, but apparently they don't give the smallpox vaccine anymore because it's eradicated. I always thought that's one of the vaccines you get as a baby. I guess not.

They're producing more of them now according to WSJ.

I got the smallpox vaccine in Ď09, so fingers crossed

The vaccine sucks, it creates a blister that you have to clean daily with disposable gloves on and put the bandaid in a zip lock bag before you toss it, and replace with a clean one.

And now I have a forever scar.

It's amazing that we we able to eradicate Smallpox. Not just because of the amount of people that needed to get vaccinated, but because of the very detailed and cumbersome instructions you have to follow to avoid spreading it after you get the vaccine-

    https://www.cdc.gov/smallpox/vaccine...ccination.html

Look under "caring for the vaccine site"

Latest "surge" seems to be flattening in my state. Pretty encouraging that with a highly infectious variant, case counts are 1/5 of the winter Omicron peak. Yes, I'm aware that they are probably undercounted, but they were undercounted during the winter surge as well. Hospitalizations/deaths have barely ticked up as well.

I'm surrounded by the virus right now.

Inlaws have it. Seems like Half of my wife's friends have it. My niece has it. My sister had it like a week and a half ago.

    I'm still walking between raindrops!

    Re: COVID-19/new coronavirus thread

A full third of my kid’s kindergarten class is out with Covid right now, and literally every single medical resident that works with my wife at the hospital is either out sick or has had it in the last month. Thankfully all cases seem mild. My oldest child (5th grade) had it last winter, but we’ve avoided it so far this spring.

We know one family whose kid had covid last fall and then had it again this spring, barely six months apart. Again, mild cases both times, but that’s two weeks out of school in one year.

If we’re all going to get this every year, or even more frequently, that is a lot of missed school/work.

Because it seems to more of an uptick, at least in my area, not a surge like we saw with when Omi first presented. I know it's a subjective term, but seems like media is using it alot for fear-mongering (assuming cases have peaked, but we shall see if the trend continues). Attached the last six month case count for VA.

I still have to teach on a live stream for kids with COVID...It probably doesn't do much, but at least they're getting a little bit of schooling while they sit home feeling absolutely fine.

A week after the super spreader Dallas tailgate where I dodged it, I was back in Dallas for a tennis tournament. Four people I was around tested positive on Tuesday. So I started testing again. I seem to have dodged it yet again.
I'm starting to think either I'm the luckiest asshole in central Texas, or I have some sort of natural immunity that others with three shots like I have had don't have. Also starting to think no one should ever go to Dallas.

    Re: COVID-19/new coronavirus thread

Good abstract on the impact of the pandemic on the CV programs around the world.

    https://academic.oup.com/eurheartj/a...t=1&login=true

    https://academic.oup.com/view-large/.../ehac227f5.tif

    Quote:
    Conclusions:
This systematic review with a meta-analysis provides, to date, the most comprehensive summary of the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on CV services and individuals with CV disease. From 189 articles, we show evidence of fewer hospitalizations, procedures, and consultations with increased mortality amongst in-hospital and community populations. We identified disparity by geographical region and country income classification in the availability of data and the severity of the detrimental effect of the pandemic on CV services, and presently there are insufficient data to fully characterize the effects to CV services in LMICs. Notwithstanding this, we provide synthesized evidence that the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in substantial global collateral CV damage.
