Spoon meaning?

Was just wondering what the story behind this song is, I read the lyrics over a few times and I love the song to death - but am kind of unclear as to what its all about.

Dave has used The Passion (Peter Gabriel) from The Last Temptation Of Christ soundtrack, and this is probably an influence here. It has a slight Gnostic feel to it.
    just a guess.

    Re: Spoon meaning?

great song, this is more in depth:

    In Depth: Spoon

First of all, the song is about Jesus right before, during, and after his death. I think that this song is about Jesus debating whether or not he's God, whether or not he is who everyone thinks he is. I think I can prove this all to you.

Spoon in spoon - Right from the start, this line had me confused for a good ten minutes. Why two spoons? I see it as how when you go to put the spoon in the coffee, you see another spoon as the reflection in the coffee. So you put the spoon in the other spoon. Just had to get that out of the way.

Now, just the act of stirring coffee represent randomness, and a thought of someone pops into your head. You turn to leave and all the answers, all of life's mysteries come to you. However, you scratch your head, get sidetracked, and all the answers leave you.

Now, Jesus was in the Garden of Gesthemene right before his death. The song poses the possibility that Jesus was debating with himself over who he really was. All of a sudden the answers came to him, but left him just as quickly.

Hand to Hand refers to him being nailed to the cross.

Wrist to the elbow describes the blood dripping down his arm (although in a much less graphic manner).

Red blood sand describes the ground underneath the cross soaking up all this blood.

Could Dad be God? - Jesus wondering if he really is God's Son.

Crosses Cross hung out like a wet rag - I think this refers to how this wasn't a special way to die. It was like the electric chair or lethal injection. It was a way of killing criminals. There were crosses everywhere. What made Jesus so different from everyone else?

Forgive you? Why? / You hung me out to dry - Jesus commenting on how people want him to forgive them after they just killed him.

Jesus then thinks that maybe he's crazy. Maybe he's not the Son of God and maybe he's just some loony. He finds solace in laughter. Laughter makes the pain go away.

Then he thinks, maybe it's everyone else who's crazy. But, again, laughing makes it all subside.

Holding, I'm holding - I think this has to do with Jesus holding on to life, and then finally giving up and then he's falling into death, still falling, still falling.

Another vision of the spoon in the coffee. I don't think this is an actual spoon and actual coffee. I think it is a way of calming down and focusing on what needs to be thought of.

Jesus thinks of something else and turns to another gate, a different gate. Perhaps the gate to heaven? Perhaps the gates to Hell? Lightning and thunder occured at the moment of his death. Jesus hides his head, and the storm disappears.

He repeats the craziness, laughter is the only escape.

From time to time / minutes and hours - Time passes, death is constant.

Some move ahead - Jesus was resurrected

Some lag behind - Most just stay dead

The balloon represent dreams, ideas, thoughts that rise to incredible heights. People start to really understand stuff, but then these things vanish. Confusion is left.

The drop of hope / that falls from his eyes - Tears due to the lost enlightenment.

Back to the spoon the coffee, Jesus is resurrected and is leaving the gates (notice how Dave doesn't use the word gate, but chooses 'turn to go away') of Hell. As he is leaving, voices cry out from Hell, saying, "Sinners sin, come now and play." The last ditch effort to turn Jesus away from God.

Jesus then laughs out loud to escape.

    hope that helped

dmb2much40 - I know this is a very old post, but I do see that you're around here a little bit. I just wanted to say that's a great post. I always had the thought that the song is about Jesus (and Jake's explanation only further confirmed that) but I could never cut through the lyrics. While your analysis might not be exactly what was going through Dave's mind as he wrote the lyrics, it definitely helps me (and others I'm sure) have some way of understanding the song more completely. So thanks.

    This is spot on
