Re: Lawncare/Landscape Thread

Not seeing much germination at all. Kinda disappointed. Some areas that are really bare that will very easy to see the new grass have nothing.

Just realized from the video you don't actually pour the concrete first with this method, though there are ones like that.

What type of grass, and when did you seed? Also, temps have been low which is likely slowing germination.

I did some patch work on Friday and threw down some new seed on those areas. I'm not seeing anything yet, either. I'd give it more time. Five days really isn't that much.

Oh, interesting. That doesn't seem that bad.

Edit: Granted I say "doesn't seem bad" as someone who has owned a home for three months and my biggest projects consist of drywall patching, painting, caulking and installing a few Nest products

Ooof, yeah, that's getting down there. I don't think we've even gotten that cold here yet. We're having the perfect stretch of weather here (70s and sunny during the day and 50s at night), so I'm hoping it takes well. Found out after I laid the seed that the product I bought has less-than-stellar reviews, so we'll see.

Not too worried about it. Our lawn is pretty shitty from the previous owners, so I'll just try again in spring if it doesn't work.

Jonathan Green Black Beauty Keystone Mix. Put it down 7 days ago, added starter fert on Sunday. I know I am being impatient. I just want to see something for as much time as I put in to this.

Yeah, I think you're good. Patience young Padawan. Just keep those seeds moist, grab a beer and wait it out.

I went w/ Jonathan Green Black Beauty Ultra this year.

I've heard really good things about the Black Beauty, I stuck with Lesco TeamMates mix because I like the higher concentration (70%) of TTTF, but I think that dark bluegrass look is just so damn sexy.

I did a solar install at a house a few years ago, that had this beautiful “wood ring” walkway. Basically you’d get a tree that’s got a trunk about 16”, cut even 2 inch thick rings, and they were then set in small black stone walkway. The wood was treated in some way, I didn’t ask about it but it looked cool as shit and certainly left an impression on me as I still remember it vividly.

Patience is not my strong point. I seeded an 800 sq ft area a few weeks ago that used to be all trees and forsythia. I used 4 yards of top soil and then put Black Beauty Sun and Shade down and I have never had such good results with seed. It looks so good right now! If I get anything near that result with the overseed, I'll be thrilled.

You also have to think, the area where your trees used to be is starting from scratch with new top soil. There is nothing really competing with the grass seed there.

With an overseed of an existing yard, the new seed is competing with all the already-established grass there in your yard. You'll probably see a lower germination rate and slower germination just on that basis alone. I would throw down some more starter fert within a week and maybe some milo/other organic to make sure the soil stays rich in nutrients during this upcoming growth period.

when we get it overseeded, what are your tips for best germination? I'm gonna try to borrow some hoses and sprinklers from the neighbors, the yard is so big I'm gonna need several hoses off a splitter.

will i be able to see the new grass growing? how many days should i be watering if it doesn't rain (never does anymore)? how long before mowing? prior to the aeration/seeding, should I mow it at like 2.5 or 3?

Saw some new grass out there today. Not a ton but enough to know that it is germinating. Weather is ideal the next few days/nights.

Seeing a lot of germination out there this morning!! Not just in the aeration holes, but I can see it in the soil. Looking forward to it really growing in the next few weeks.

It is absolutely imperative to keep the soil moist for the first 10-14 days after seeding. Usually 2 or 3 sprinkles of 10-15 minutes. You want water in the soil but you don’t want to drown the seed out- a delicate dance but the above approach should work for you.

And yes, depending on what type of grass you’re overseeing with, you should see germination within a week or two. I’m going to be two weeks out tomorrow and most of what I put down has sprouted and is growing nicely.

Hollies are just about gone. So excited to have them out. Poor guys had to dig them out by hand rather than pull them with the truck because the ground was too wet to drive on. I'll post pics when they finish up.

A good amount of rain followed by abundant sunshine and I am really starting to see the new grass taking hold in the lawn. The old grass also really seems to have been rejuvenated by the process as well. Some parts are not seeing the same results but I think I need to be more aggressive preparing the soil in those areas next year.

My lawn is growing like fucking crazy right now. All the new stuff is filling in beautifully and my existing lawn is absolutely thriving. We got some decent rain the past 24-36 hours and I swear my lawn grew over an inch overnight. I just mowed it on Saturday and am probably going to have to cut it again tonight.

I'll try to remember to post some pics. It is looking thicccccc right now, absolutely love this time of year

We need more pics in this thread.

I finally got to overseeding and throwing down fert over the weekend. It's a little later in the year than I would have liked, but hopefully I get good germination. I used LCN's starter fert as well, so we'll see how that works.
