I just love UM since they just do so many different things and it sounds so good.
UM started me getting into other jambands like the Disco Biscuits and Galactic since phish was getting old for me again

i saw them while i was extremely baked, opening for ben folds.

it was an odd show, mainly b/c of the line up.

    umphreys, kill hannah, ben folds.

buti twas a good show, and satisfied three of my music groups
jammy, fucked up, ben folds (yes, he's a music group)

Amazing band, they don't get the credit they deserve...check out new year's eve 2002 on the archive...well worth the 4 discs, the matrix sounds great and they cover side B of Abbey Road.

However, I will say that either Umphrey's or MMW would win the award for tighest musicianship in the jamband scene. Everyone in this band is just an exceptional musician.

why umphrey's is so badass. check out the setlist from last night:
    Set I
"Tapers appreciation rap" > DBK, Bright Lights > Stewart^, Walletsworth, Uncle Wally*, Ocean Billy

    Set II
    JaJunk > Q-Bert > Metallica Jam ("O - E - O") > JaJunk > Big Bottom > JaJunk > Stewart > JaJunk, Ognir#, Pooh Doggie > PTP Jam$ > Right Now Jam$$ > Pooh Doggie > Right Now Jam > Kimble##, Bridgeless,
    %Nopener**, ^^40's Theme

    E:
***Send Me On Down Jam > Late In The Evening****

^with Fuzz-like jam, may have segued into walletsworth
*Introduced as their attempt at a dance remix. Thought that would mean Blue Techo but instead it was this. Sounded more like a Punk Rock Anthemy type version to me. Imagine a Fugazi double time version. Wailed.
#Began with various backwards guitar riffs, then Jake talking in a way that it sounded like his vocal track was backwards, motioning with his hand as if to imitate turning a record backwards to make such noises, repeating "Ognir", and then going into a backwards version of Ringo. So it started with the "Buncha greasy animals" part, then the spacewalk middle jam section, then the lyrics portion (minus first verse?), then intro riff and done.
$Very short jam of the outro gansta rap riff, ~1 minute
$$Van Hagar, mainly just the beginning piano riff each time
##Very end piano melody was played over minor chords
%Banter, Pony lights up a smoke and Bayliss says Pony only smokes when he's drinking. Pony then sticks cigarette between strings on the headstock of his bass, and comments on how he always wanted to do that.
**Lounge style, with Jake on kit and Myers on vocals
^^with Right Now tease just before starting
*** transition from 40's was a Pony bass solo, lasting up until the band came back out and began the encore. Song was semi-country style jam over repeating "send me on down" lyric.
****With jam reprise after bringing it down and thanking the crowd as if it was over.

its actually very annoying. at school and everything people were like "dude, lets go get drunk at the umphreys concert". no one ever mentioned the set or the songs, just how drunk or high they were. i probably would see them, but i don't like being around assholes like that.

that is stupid that they go just for that. but i'd still see them anyways, just because their jams melt my mind and face off.

i've been talking about how jake cinninger from umphreys is a guitar god, and how technically talented and fucking ridiculous they are....well here's your chance to see for yourself.....please download and enjoy:

    http://www.sharingthegroove.org/msgb...0&pagenumber=1

and for all you zeppelin fans, umphrey's excellent fool in the rain cover is sandwiched in between their instrumental masterpiece, nothing too fancy.

    Re: Umphrey's McGee Appreciation Thread.

will be out june 29th, first major studio release from a major label:

On their new record Anchor Drops, the band realizes its full potential for wide acceptance by listeners well beyond the jam world. In no way a recreation of the Umphrey's live presentation, Anchor Drops is highlighted by dazzling songcraft, memorable hooks, philosophical lyrics that manage to be poetic yet earthy and accessible, anthemic guitar lines, rock-solid rhythms, ecstatic climaxes, haunting acoustic interludes, dramatic sound effects, and a thematic coherence that enables each song to function as part of an epic interconnected whole. All those parched heads out there begging for some depth and complexity will doubtlessly be drawn to the band’s cerebro-cosmic geometry on songs like “Plunger” and “Wife Soup,” with their instantaneous time fluctuations and baroque embellishments. Lyrically, Umphrey’s McGee’s world-view hovers somewhere between pessimism and hope. The words are suggestive and resonant, just vague enough to entertain multiple meanings.

With Anchor Drops, Umphrey's McGee has unleashed a virtual joyride for the heart, body, mind, and soul. Bon Voyage.
