Re: From Jam Band to Rock Band
Having tim makes them more of a jam band, and they jam more often and better now than they ever have. Early on like 92-94 they were very jammy and alot of the time jams changed on songs like liog, jimi thing, two step night to night. However most of the time after that their "jams" became very safe and structured. Since tim has come along we have seen very jammed out songs that are completely improvisational such as '08 Two steps, '08 -'10 #41's, liog is a completely improvised on the jam besides the chords Dave plays. Fonze has been playing more improved basslines, Coffin allows Carter and fonze to jam with much more improv than when Roi was around.
Honestly I don't know where some of you get your opinions, I think a lot of you think jam band sound means old dmb sound. This is just bs. One of my friends who only listens to jam bands and appreciates DMB but doesn't love them has multiple time gone to me saying how much more open and jammy they've gotten. I mean there's literally dozens of songs where i can point out how it is being jammed out more now than 5 or 15 years ago. Not liking the setlists or the sound of the new songs does not mean they are less of a jam band now. Their live sound changing to a more rock sound because they have an electric guitar doesn't mean they are less of a jam band. Like, have you guys compared the start of seek up now to the start of seek up 10 years ago? How are you going to tell me they are less of a jam band now than before. The best part of this whole deal is DMB is one of the the only band in the jam band scene (and they are in that scene whether the band or its fans wants to admit it or not) that isn't known for electric guitar. Yet the second they sound more electric they are no longer a jam band.
I'm not saying they wern't tighter in '98 because they were but dayumm people need to appreciate certain aspects of the current iteration of dmb more
