Re: **Official Running Thread**

It's not accurate. No way on the second easiest mile (mile 3) did he have a heart rate around 150 and then later in the race dropped to 89.

Either the beginning was wrong or the end was wrong. I'm gonna guess it started going on the fritz mile 4.

Itís not abnormal for his races. Just about everything 10k and over have HR less than 130. Heís had different watches as well. Some people have ridiculous low HRs. My dadís resting HR is low 30s sometimes high 20s. It could be off, but not by a ton.

Why was his heart rate "so high" for the first 4 miles?

He had a faster mile at 3 and settled in, that might be an explanation. Sure, his HR may have been 30 beats higher throughout the race; thatís still insane. Thatís zone 2-3 for a 68 minute half. Impressive.

Hearts can beat in the 20s and you’re still alive?! That’s crazy. My resting is maybe high 50s at best with runs consistently in the 160s no matter if I try to slow it down or run my pace. Granted, only on week 10 of running consistently, but maybe that’s just where I’m at.

Did my first ever 7-mile run this afternoon after taking it mostly easy this week with COVID. Came in with a 8:35 average and :05 over an hour. Mid 60s and flat definitely helps.

The big thing you need is getting in longer runs so that your body can get used to just being out there for 3+ hours.

Second, you only want to increase your mileage by no more than 10%. Meaning if you run 60 miles this week, you shoulnd't run more than 66 miles next week.

Since you are already at 60 miles a week and your base is super strong what you can do is add miles to your sunday long run and then just run a shorter speed workout during the week. Then the other 4 days are roughly the same as what you've been doing. For example instead of 6 days running 10 miles you do 10, 9, 6, 10, 9, 16

    I'll keep this short:

this week: Have your long run be 14 miles. 1 fast work out. No more than 65 miles.
week ending 12/5: 16 mile long run. 1 fast workout. No more than 68.
week ending 12/12: 15 mile long run. 1 fast workout. No more than 70.
week ending 12/19: Long run of at least 18. 1 fast workout. No more than 72.
week ending 12/26: taper begins. Long run of 16. Run 6 days. 1 fast. no more than 60 miles
week ending 1/2: Long run of 12. Run 5 days. 1 fast. No more than 45 miles.
Marathon week: run 4 days all slow. should be about 20 miles total.

For goal time that's tough because you haven't been training for speed. 4 hour marathon is 9:10 pace.
Many of you responded to me and I wanted to thank all of you for the advice. I wound up using the above advice from Cazzie as the basis for my training.

I wound up posting a 4:19:44 official time. It was Disney so I stopped for a few photo ops on the course, and some bathroom breaks. At any stop I paused my watch so my entire logged run was a 4:09:42 time, 26.46 miles, and a 9'26" pace. Obviously that's longer than the actual race (lots of zig zagging early on due to inexperienced runners). Per my personal records on the NRC it says my fastest marathon is 4:06:04.

Overall I'm really happy with the 4:19:44 official time. My only goal was to finish, but averaging under 10 minute miles feels like a win.

Unique. The cool part is running through the parks and the behind the scenes areas of the parks. The not so fun part was going up and down the highway ramps because of the elevation.

I'm not sure how it compares to other races being my first, but there was plenty of water/powerade/first aid stations along with the way. Once in a while there'd be someone handing out bananas or energy gummies.

    Damn, nice.

Sounds like you got exactly what you wanted out of the race! Can't ask for anything more than that!

Active HR measured at the wrist is known to produce some wild things. Those are some pretty massive spikes and drops in HR. I'd agree with Cazzie that it looks off, but also no reason to doubt you. Who knows.

Getting very tired of these 20 degree and below running temps in the Chicago area. Just fuck this already. Can't really go more than 5 miles. Have to wear way too many layers. Gets old.

Yep! And I'm going to feel a lot more confident this October heading into marathon #2.

For me the worst part is just how crappy the trails have been getting. Too much slush and just random uneven ice patches. It's blister city for me this time of year.

It could just be in my head, but temp wise I feel like the wind chill has been worse than usual.
