Re: Ants Podcast 89: Come Tomorrow - Episode Discussion
Here is my take. At the St. Paul show which I attended there were a few things I noticed. The horn section filled the signature Boyd riffs during the songs that had them. The podcast discusses Ants Marching being an FU to Boyd. I've seen over 150 shows and that is exactly how I took it. It did not seem like a fly over "hits" show to me. I've seen those "mail it in" types of shows from the band and this one didn't feel like that. It felt like "dang its great to be back out here again, let's play, and thank god Boyd isn't here". Sort of a shedding of some negative energy or a relief that the band aid had been torn off.
That being said most bands keep a very tight locker room. Nobody will ever know the exact situation. Nor should we. We as fans haven't been grinding like they have for 20 plus years. We go for the good time. They are working, hopefully having a good time to but make no mistake, it's a grind.
The podcast mentions the kiss from Boyd to Dave. I had never heard of that before so I watched the video and TMZ piece on it. My take is that there was something festering with Boyd. As I write this, I tried to think of an analogy that would work. I couldn't think of the right one. Maybe some else can. I took it as "i proved my point what are you going to do about it" Apparently its been something over a long period of time. Who knows what it is. According to my third hand knowledge there was no love lost when Boyd decided to leave. I don't know specifics but I don't expect him back anytime soon.
Does it have anything to do with Boyd's financial issues that were reported in 2015? Maybe his reduced role since Timmy and Jeff came in? (doubtful).
